Science should be free to all to level field.

I am an ACM member, author, reviewer, occupied different chair roles (program/track) in ACM conferences and also an associate editor in an ACM journal. Further, being based in Europe, I do not get the same amount of support as my colleagues in US/Canada get when volunteering in the aforementioned activities. Still, I am doing this work as a service to the broad community. Given this, I find it worrying to add $99 to my subscription to get access to the metadata of (including my own) DL articles. I think that my volunteering work (and additional money via subscriptions, part of conferences' benefits sent to ACM, etc.) should be profitable for the maximum number of users.

I disagree with the latest changes of ACM!

Please reactivate all functions – as authors, we already pay a considerable fee for publication, specifically with the aim of open access. And please leave out this auto-generated LLM data – the meta information is already carefully provided by authors and is of much higher quality.

I also want to strongly object to the LLM-generated summaries. As authors, we write abstracts: do not insult us by replacing our abstracts with hallucinated AI slop. ACM should be better than this, but apparently thinks it wants to be one of the cool kids who is using AI too. It is about as useful as an AI-enabled showerhead (which does exist, but that does not mean it is not a stupid idea). I served two terms as EiC of ACM Transactions on Storage, have served on dozens of program and steering committees, and was the founding general chair of FAST. I know what it means to publish and disseminate research to the community, and what ACM is doing to contrary to all of those goals and values.

I strongly oppose the very recent introduction of a new metadata/search/commentary paywall at the ACM Digital Library.

Also: Of all the AI-powered services that could've been implemented, why article summaries? Do you really want people to read the articles themselves? And why risk it when these summaries are apparently peppered by the hallucinations and misleading statements characterizing modern language-based AI output? If this is really about open access, why not use AI to provide translations to the various ACM clientele from around the world who use a diversity of languages other than hegemonic English? (And who came up with these ideas ... I really hope it wasn't ChatGPT.)
