Restore Fully Free and Open Access to the ACM Digital Library

Very disappointed with the changes ACM is making to the DL. Please restore access asap.

I agree completely with the goals of the petition. Do not backslide!

Horrible misguided move on ACM DL's part

Outrageous. The bitly bit is also terrible. Why redefine FREE to not be FREE? That is absurd. PGN, Life Member and Fellow, member for 70 years.

Please keep the open access to the ACM DL really open. This should include metadata, since accessing data without access to metadata and without the tools metadata enables is not open access. Thank you.

Perhaps if the ACM paid reviewers to referee papers this might be a reasonable move... No, even then, scientific knowledge should be free. It this petition fails, computer scientists should follow category theorists and create a free-to-publish-in free-to-access flagship journal on the model of Theory and Application of Categories. All that's needed is a university willing to host the server and print a copy of everything for its library and the national library of the country it's in.

Keep knowledge free!

ACM introduced an author-pay model in exchange for open access. With this change that restricts open access, we really feel fooled: we now have to pay both to publish and to have full read access.

Member of ACM since 1971. ACM is and should remain valuable asset to the IT community. Please, do not follow this selfdestructive path.

This was a short-sighted move. I understand that ACM OPEN was planned on the basis that the income from OPEN licenses will replace the previous income from DL subscriptions: there should be no need for ACM to try to squeeze out a little more money by reintroducing a paywall.

I am an ACM member and I was not consulted about this change. I support the ACM primarily because of its role in open-access publishing of computer science papers.

Paywalling metadata destroys far more value than it creates, because it undermines the very visibility and impact that make the ACM Digital Library economically viable.

Separating the work and its metadata makes no sense - esp. for an organization that represents modern ideas in computing that keeps these together.

Knowledge should be free.

The ACL Library wasn't very good to begin with, most of the titles were under paywalls, you could only see abstracts and references. Now it's even worse? Shame!
