Restore Fully Free and Open Access to the ACM Digital Library

ACM member here since 2009. Don't make things complicated. It is unbecoming of an important and venerable organization

I applaud the spirit of ACM Open and strongly condemn the new metadata/search/commentary paywall at the ACM Digital Library (DL).

Let’s keep papers as accessible as possible for students and researchers alike!

I sign this petition, because I support open access, though I do not agree with everything that is written about bibliometric data in the petition text. I think that bibliometric data and specifically citations are overrated indicators. I disagree with the notion that citations are a correct indicator of impact, since citations counts are biased by many factors that have nothing to do with the research contents of the article, including author's gender, author's affiliation, author's fame, survey vs. original, incremental vs. breakthrough, multi-authored vs. singly-authored, and more. An especially glaring example is that of incorrect, incomplete, or unclear papers getting many citations, if several authors try to fix, complete, or clarify. Sometimes one gets the impression that the more rigorous, the more complete, the better written a paper is, the least it will be cited, since people won't have a reason to cite a paper that truly solved and closed a problem.

Additionally, replacing the author's abstract with an "AI Summary" is a terrible idea. I want to hear from the author what the significance of the paper is, not a mechanical summary of its details that may miss the real significance.

Strongly agree with the petition. ACM must restore fully free and open access to all DL features.
