My husband and are both graduates of HCHS Class of 1981. Football MVP, basketball and track teams and myself gymnastics, leads in both plays and musicals. The plays and musicals were the greatest part of my years at Central. I became a professional actress because of my HCHS teachers' encouragement. We moved back from LA when our son was born for the sole purpose for our children to attend HCHS and have the same incredible experiences at high school that we did. We have discussed as a family, with much sadness, while waiting for the referendum, that we would prefer to move out of the area if drama/music is not restored. There is no point in paying extremely high taxes and being at this high school when the school doesn't provide and value ALL students, especially when there are so many good schools close by that do provide and care about their students. I graduated HCHS in 1989. I played football for 4 years – MVP my senior year thank you very much, basketball for 3 years – not even close to MVP :) and I participated in multiple theatrical productions. My experience in the drama program at Central was equally as important as my athletic experience. Both programs presented opportunities to develop skills needed to be successful in life and at work. Working effectively in a group / team and “trusting the process” are two that immediately come to mind. I do not live in the Chicago land area and I am not 100% up to speed with the ins and outs of the D86 referendum. But if the athletic programs are to be restored it seems logical, fair, and necessary for the drama programs to be treated the same way.

I have gone on to earn an MFA and a PhD and am currently chair of a Theatre and Communication department. I owe much of that to my start at Central.

The performing arts funding needs to be be fully restored with the passage of the referendum. For the students involved in the performing arts this is an outlet for their immense talent and passion. The arts should be treated with the same concern and respect as sports and academics.

We need to support our kids in these passions. It’s not fair to give back sports and cut arts - not everyone is n athlete. The things these kids learn in Drama reflect real life, as well. Team work, cooperation, the confidence and ability to lead a meeting and get in front of a group and speak confidently.

We need our children to have a well rounded education. The arts, including drama, serves an integral part of education. Please look at the whole spectrum of education and reinstate all clubs and activities at Central.

Our daughter Nandini found her tribe in the speech and drama clubs. Without which she would have floundered and been lost. She was very depressed until she found the speech and drama teams.. And because of the amazing teacher support she excelled and she won awards and competed at State several times. This set her up to win multiple high award scholarships at Universities. These programs are VITAL to raising kids to be accomplished young adults. Cutting them after all the hard work put into the referendum is saying D86 values sports over performance arts. RESTORE these vital programs for all students so they can have the same opportunities my daughter had.

The arts program at HTCHS has been integral in my success as a person and professional. The skills and interpersonal development afforded by arts programs like drama (and all the other arts) have set me and hundreds of graduates on long and fulfilling careers that contribute greatly to our society. In a matter of moments you can researc and find that moving ahead in the global marketplace, it is America’s creativity and liberal arts education that provides our best competitive advantage as other countries continue to surpass our academic investments. I do not believe, I know our continued support and expansion of arts programming and education are necessary throughout our society at large. I urge all of you to maintain and expand the programming in the drama and other art currriculums in Hinsdale. Thank you
