Students should not be able dictate what will and will not affect their grades or have an opportunity to cheat from students who complete their work on time and have it returned correctly by the teacher. It happens way more often than everyone thinks.

My children are in 5th and 6th grade. It is very hard to help your child improve with standards based grading. It would be a huge mistake to implement it in middle school.

Students who are rewarded for making an effort even though they do not understand a topic are ill-prepared for the real world. Students who do not turn in their assignments but still get credit will become workers who fired and not understand why.

There is nothing wrong with recognizing students whose efforts result in subject mastery, just as athletic students are selected for varsity sports and the best musicians are selected for first chair.

It is imperative to keep accountability as part of the grade. I feel that part of mastery is learning to follow deadlines and having consequences when they are not meant. What is the incentive for students to do homework if it is not going to count.

I teach a the college level. Without accountability, you are setting a student up for failure in life. Everything has a deadline, and penalties are assessed for being late.
Independent practice (also known as. homework) is needed to reinforce skills. You would not ask a coach or music teach to make practice optional. Please, help to keep the standards high! Your proposed list is great!

It is strange that the letter grading systems that worked for over 100 years is no longer good. Kids need to understand responsibility. My grandson gets the APs, Ps, etc. grades that mean nothing to me nor him.
