Our children need to be held accountable for their actions! Once in the work force they will have deadlines. If they don't perform their job, they will be fired. With this new proposed grading practice, motivation will disappear! If our children don't perform, they should have to deal with the consequences! If they don't do the work, they SHOULD get a zero!!

I am a retired VBCPS teacher with 30 years of service .
I am also a product of VBCPS having attended all grades 1-12.
I am distressed to learn that our schools' administrators are considering such measures to change the current grading system.
I hope our leaders will reexmine these new policies and respect our teachers' expectations for student accountability in assessing performance and determining grades

We must retain accountability in our grading. One of the purposes of school is to prepare kids for life and I can think of no trait that will serve them better than a strong work ethic. Students need to learn that there are consequences to turning in work late or not at all, failing to study for a quiz or test, or cheating. It is better to learn those lessons early in life when the only penalty is a reduced grade or a zero than to go unprepared into college, jobs, car loans and mortgages, and dealings with the IRS and other government entities. In all aspects of life beyond high school there are penalties for tardiness, lack of performance, and cheating and they will be far more severe than a minor blip in a grade from which one can rebound pretty quickly.

This grading method is unacceptable. I will not have my daughter enter into college and be completely shocked and at a major disadvantage when she learns that she is actually expected to work and be accountable. Do NOT implement this atrocity.

As a former teacher, and grandparent of a first grader, I do not like this method. I don't really understand how my grandson is progressing. Homework is given but not checked or graded. Many children don't even do it and my grandson resents me for insisting that he complete it correctly. He was challenged more in private kindergarten.

Secondary students need to be held accountable for their work/actions because the real world- college and employment don't allow late work. If no work is done- you're are simply fired.

This grading system will only ensure the failure of our students to take on the challenges of college, work and life. Accountability and behavior is as important as mastery of material. The causes for lower achievement students are multifactorial --that is where the focus of the school should be-- to help those specific students to raise up. It is a band-aid solution to lower the standards so everyone could graduate and look proficient. Our students will pay the price if this new grading system is allowed. They will grow believing that poor accountability behavior and lack of responsibility is acceptable. Colleges and workplaces will not tolerate this. That is reality.

As a former VBCPS teacher and parent of 3 VBCPS grads I find the lack of accountablility in the proposed changes to the grading system ridiculous. VBCPS students should be prepared for what they will face in college and in the workforce. Lowering standards and expectations will not prepare them adequately.
