This is tragic, and the ones to pay for it in the end will be the students. Not only will they not achieve their personal best because they aren't being held accountable to reaching and meeting high standards, but they will lose out in receiving the benefits of colleges and employers having respect for their accomplishments. They will at risk for failing in the classroom or in the position in the future because there is a huge gap in lax standards and expectations of now to the much more stringent ones in the future. They will believe they have the right to do work on their time and they don't have to do it correctly the first time. That is not the person I would want for my doctor, attorney, policeman, and so many other community leaders.

We will be creating a generation of citizens with no understanding of how life really works. This change will not prepare students for the future. Instead, it will create a population with an even greater expectation that the need for hard work is not necessary and that the government will provide for their every need. I am wondering if the wise Doctors who advocate these change were given multiple opportunities to retake their college tests and were forgiven if they did not meet their deadlines?

I was shocked when I read the purposed changes. Our children need to be raised to be responsible, hard working adults. Neither of which will be instilled with the purposed changes. We have fabulous educators in the City of Virginia Beach and parents need to work with them to ensure our children are receiving the best possible education. If these changes are approved, I will hate to see what our students SOL scores are going to look like. And you cant hold the teaching staff accountable for those grades if you are tying their hands.

I have a student in VBCPS and I find the proposed grading rules to be completely ludicrous. I regularly encourage my child to study, do her best, and aim to achieve above average. I have told teachers to give my child a zero on her grade if she does not follow the assignment and/or the deadline. How can you possibly presume to be developing responsible citizens in the VBCPS system when your proposed grading rules are so counter to this? You are tying the hands of your teachers; placing undue burden on your teachers who already give above and beyond what their pay grade calls for; and creating a generation of irresponsible adults. Is this what you want your legacy to be?

As a partner in a large local accounting firm, we look to grow our future workforce with well-educated local students. Detaching academic progress from behavior and work habits is the most absurd idea ever! If the administrators proposing these ideas hired our firm to prepare their tax returns, and our staff decided to file their tax returns a month late because they are improperly trained about the importance of deadlines, I bet these people would sign a different song.

As a parent of 4 kids in the VB system - one in HS, one in MS and 2 in elem school, homework is necessary at the older and higher levels. There is just not enough time in class to cover, practice, and master all of the material. And accountability is definitely a skill that needs to be learned before children go to college/work/the real world.

Our kids need a grading system that reflects their efforts. This "everyone gets a trophy" mentality is NOT preparing our kids for the very competitive world out there. Stop the madness!!!!

We already tried this at my previous school, and students did homework regardless of whether or not it counted for a grade. Because if they didn't, they would do bad on tests and classwork. Aside from the numerical consequences of not doing homework, teachers would also make their own consequences for not doing homework. Since we will be doing the homework even if it is not for a grade, why not just simply make it count for a grade. I understand that they're trying to make it so that your grade accurately affects a student's understanding of the material, but the smartest person in the world could end up broke. Putting in work is what gets you places in life. By not letting homework count, you are almost encouraging a no drive mentality. Also, zeroes should be given because when a teacher gives a student a zero, it stresses the importance of the assignment, and encourages them to do it once they see the zero. Not assigning zeroes also encourages the no drive mentality, resulting in little effort.

Accountability in grading was how to make Virginia Beach School excellent in the past and will be in the future. If the homework cannot be counted as part of the grade, then what is the motivation for student to do the homework? If test retakes are encouraged, how we teach our kids responsibility?
