i am a parent and i will be at the next school board meeting and i've spoken to teachers, counselors, principal and administration about some of these topics and I am dumbfounded at the lack of care and low expectations for these kids

I have been teaching for 15 years and this is absolutely ridiculous. The teachers know that this is going to be the worst decision the superintendent could make. We know that if kids aren't held accountable they won't do the work. When in life do you get retakes of tests because you chose not to prepare for it the first go round. If the kids don't learn responsibility then the work force is going to have the biggest bunch of incompetent babies applying for jobs. Common sense would tell you this is a horrible decision but what do teachers know. We just do all the work while the superintendent sits back and undoes everything.

I would have to ask "What the new Superintendent is trying to achieve with this initiative?" Has the school board directed him to reduce failure rates and dropout rates at the cost of SAT/ACT scores and college acceptance rates? Is mediocrity more socially acceptable? Mr. Spence is a product of the old VBCPS and must have benefited from the exceptionally high standards of that now apparently antiquated 20th century school system. Three decades ago we selected Virginia Beach as our home largely because of the school system. We still have grandchildren in the VBCPS today and are appalled by these proposed changes. Where do our children have to move to ensure an education for their children?

The proposed grading system is unacceptable. This will water down our grading system and say to our children that timeliness and accountability are not important, which I can tell you are key to success in the business world. If we want our kids to be successful in their future we need to teach them the skills they need to have in the business world, and timeliness and accountability are vital to that success. Do NOT change the grading system.

This is not what Dr. Spence indicated to the Virginian Pilot in his comments. These decisions will create students that are unable to accept responsibility in both college and the real working world!

This is ridiculous. How is just giving them a grade okay. They need to learn that if they do not do thier work thier are consequences. I am a mother of 5. This is wrong!

As a product of VBCPS, a parent of VBCPS students, and an educator myself, I DO NOT agree with this decision. Parents, as well as students, need to be held accountable for their actions. In the real world there will not be anyone "holding their hands." All students have the same amount of time to complete their work, so if it is turned in late it SHOULD be deducted, as this would NOT be allowed in college! Seriously, zeros SHOULD be given for work not done or not turned in!! That's not fair to those students that DO THE ACTUAL WORK and TURN IT IN ON TIME!! Why not just give EVERY VBCPS student an A and graduate them with honors! We are preparing our future to be responsible and this is allowing them to become lazy and self-centered adults. Is this really our future? I THINK NOT!!! MAKE EVERY STUDENT ACCOUNTABLE!!!!! I know I make my children accountable for their actions as well as their education.....I WANT TO MAKE THEM CONTRIBUTING ADULTS TO OUR SOCIETY!! Come on Va Beach let's get our act together!

VBCPS is setting our kids up for failure in life by changing the accountability and grading practices as VB Schools. When a child is learning how to walk they fall often and they almost always pick themselves back up again.
You cannot succeed in life without failure, because only when we fail do we truly learn how to succeed!
This is absolutely ludicrous and reeks of bureaucracy! The VB School board has obviously sold out and have turned their backs on why they became educators in the first place!
VBCPS SCHOOL BOARD SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES & SHOULD ALL RESIGN IMMEDIATELY!

I'm embarrassed that we would even consider this. VBCPS Mission Statement says, "in partnership with the entire community, will empower every student to become a life long learner, who is responsible, productive and engaged citizen in the global community." Where I work, if something doesn't support our Mission, we DO NOT consider it. These proposed changes DO NOT come close to supporting our Mission! We are failing our children by implementing things that enable laziness and disregard for deadlines and accountability. Frankly, I also feel like this will heighten disrespect for teachers and authority, which is a growing problem in so many children today. My children work hard to do their best to get good grades, meet deadlines, follow instructions and respect their authority. They also expect consequences when appropriate. My children shld NOT look the same on paper as a child that doesn't care or put forth effort. If we implement these changes, yes, VBCPS may look good on paper, but at what cost? OUR CHILDREN'S! They will fail out of college bc they don't have work ethic, don't understand the importance of balance and time management and will think the world should cater to them. WRONG! Corporate America will laugh them right out of a job! I pray that you abide by the VBCPS mission and "in partnership" listen to the teachers and parents! Keep accountability! Our children are counting on us! The future of America is counting on them!

Accountability in school is steadily being decreased for students and increased for teachers. This is rediculous.

No college would ever have classes that have these horrible standards. No job would ever accept workers turning things in by the end of a 9week period instead of when it needs to be done. Virginia Beach students will be set up to fail!!

As a retired VBCPS teacher and coach- Lynnhaven Middle, Landstown High School and Cox High School (APUSH)- I strongly support accountability and responsibility. We owe this to our students- otherwise, we are certainly NOT preparing them to be responsible adults as they enter college, the military or the work force. Please do not let our future down!

We are entering this dangerous and unreal world of everyone gets a trophy. Unless our children and their parents are accountable, we will not be able to compete in the global market in any capacity. This bodes very poorly for our country's future.

Kids are supposed to go to school to learn. Lately teachers have been stuffing assignments down their undeveloped throats so the kids who work the most (not the smartest) get the better GPA. School is turning into a place where the only thing that matters is good grades.

The purpose of education is to prepare our youth for the world they will live in. That includes knowledge and skills which they do not receive at home. Responsibly must be developed over time, & requires practice, which does not seem to be taking place at home.

Love all of this. The only thing I hated was a zero on something... It REALLY affects your grade and thus GPA and thus your chances of getting into a good school and thus basically your life it seems. I found teachers would take advantage of giving zeros to particularly settle a vendetta against students they had problems with. If you put in effort on something and really try - you should not get a zero. Period. A zero should be for cheating or zero amount of effort.
