Reschedule Portage Northern Homecoming

Please put of respect for this holiday and the Jewish religion, please reschedule.

This makes sense. Please make the change.

Portage Public Schools is better than this. Scheduling a major school event on a Holy day for any religion is inexcusable. A simple on-line check when the schedule was being created could have avoided this issue. Let's get this fixed now.

Everyone deserves to have their holy days honored.

I respect my friends enough to know when things are important

Seriously, there's only five or six days that they have to avoid. How is it that there's a major event on at least one of them, every single year? Ridiculous.

Please reconsider your dates.

I takes awareness to be responsive to everyone in a community. If this absolutely cannot be rescheduled, it would behoove PPS to know how these and other holidays (Ramadan Eid, Dawali, etc.) might impact scheduling going forward.

Please re-schedule. Two respected institutions in our community should not be in conflict. Thanks!

This is a big mistake that needs to be corrected.

Please be a beacon of light in these trying times. (I live in Portage).

60 students really does warrant some consideration. Not only on general principles of of respect and fairness, but more importantly because it is unproductive to create tensions between institutions which should rightly be held in equal regard. The schools and the community have a symbiotic relationship, it should never be a contest. In this country, it should never have to be a choice.

In the spirit of honoring and supporting diversity, I earnestly request the Portage Public Schools reschedule homecoming activities. Jewish students deserve the same respect as Christian students, whose holidays never conflict with scheduled school activities.

With the state of our country and the intolerance being faced by so many, this is something that could make a difference. Be the change.

Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday are all scheduled for no school those days in most school districts so that Christian students can partake in their holidays. The least that can be done for Jewish students is to reschedule the football game and/or the dance so that they may partake in their holidays and their school functions.

The public school system I attended in Ohio shut down on the two Jewish High Holidays. They would never have ever thought to create this kind of conflict for its observant students. Given that Portage would not schedule a ball game on Christmas or Easter or even Good Friday, why not extend the same courtesy to its Jewish students.

I'm assuming that Portage parents would be in an outrage if an important event was scheduled on Christmas or Easter. Yom Kippur is equally important to Jewish students. Please respect that and reschedule your homecoming weekend.

As the director and principal of Kalamazoo's Jewish Sunday school, I can attest to the need for students to attend synagogue services on Yom Kipur. This is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, and it is spent fasting and praying for a good new year. I would like to ask the school district to reschedule its Homecoming activities (to a day that is not Yom Kipur) so that Jewish students can participate in them. Thank you!
