Please show respect and reschedule the Homecoming festivities. Set the mark for other districts to follow your example. You know as well as I do that this community is not an all white, Christian community. We must be tolerant of all faiths if we are to succeed, and what a great place to start!

I can't believe we're still dealing with this... When I was in high school in West Michigan back in the late 80s early 90s, this was an issue. It was an issue at my school until the year that the quarterback and the next star player for the football team were both Jewish, informed the school of the dates for the high holidays, and critical games were scheduled during the high holidays anyway. The game on the high holidays was cancelled the night of and rescheduled (the opposing school was very gracious) when those two players did not show up for the game (they'd given advance warning ... The school figured they'd just skip services during game time) ... And the school didn't want to risk its undefeated season. Scheduling around the high holidays has been respected at that school since that time frame ... Well, until a particular staffing change - a blip ... Then, they were again reminded.
Sigh.
Progress can be difficult.
I sit on many committees and am involved in many activities locally in the Kalamazoo area, and have to miss meetings, games, events, classes routinely due to less sensitive scheduling. Shabbat is a routine one. High holidays also ...

As a Jewish community member of Kalamazoo County, I continue to find it very disturbing that schools and other institutions plan major events on the holiest of days in the Jewish calendar. Please consider changing the date of this event to show respect for the diversity of this area.
