Although an alumni of St. Chris (16') this was well written and I wholeheartedly support this movement. Would love to see the STC community embrace some much needed change and progress in order to become a more inclusive environment for all

Hi Ron...thank you for signing the petition. I implore you to really listen to the students and alumnae who are speaking about their experiences. If the school was already doing most of this, there would be no need for the petition.

I implore St. Catherine's to consider how the school has directly or inadvertently contributed to institutionalized racism. I hope you will support our black students.

Class of 2013. I'm signing this petition in belief that St. Catherine's can do better. St. Catherine's needs to make it a priority to have the uncomfortable, proactive conversations and actions about how the school and student body can be actively anti racist. Encourage the students at the school to be critical thinkers and seek change for the better. We have a lot of work to do. Let's get to it.

As a St C alum, it’s surprising to me that the school does not already support students of color in the manner requested in this petition. The K-8 school where I work, Trinity Episcopal School in Charlotte, NC, does all these things well while also understanding that we can always do better - for example, we have student affinity groups, a faculty/staff White Allies group, regular diversity lessons in the classroom starting in kindergarten, parent affinity groups, parent education, and black, Latinx, and LGBTQ faculty and staff . I’m happy to be a resource to connect St C with faculty and admin at Trinity if that would be helpful.

As a parent of a lower school student, this needs to be implemented ASAP. I truly love St. Catherine's but I must make sure that my daughter is not impacted by the lack of programs for her whole body.

Starting at the Lower School, as a part-time French teacher in 1978, I taught very few African American children. Imagine what it was like for a five year old, at its most impressionable and vulnerable stage in life, to start school where there was not one African American teacher and few children of her race. The experience of witnessing that stays with me. Since that time, I have heard from former African American students who shared their painful Lower School experiences. They endured these alone as there wasn’t one African American adult staff member to whom they could turn. These women’s messages brought tears to my eyes, and guilt at my own lack of knowledge and sensitivity to their experiences. I realize it is not 1978; however African American children and teachers are still in the minority at St. Catherine’s. Both deserve our love and support. I strongly encourage that there be at least one African American teacher for each LS grade level. In addition, I would want each African American child to have the choice, if she seeks a guidance counselor, to be able to choose one who would best suit her needs be it African American or Caucasian.
