Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago
A pleasant good day to you Madame Prime Minister I am but a humble citizen of the Beautiful Twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. I write this letter to you with a heavy heart for my brothers and sisters in this country. I am 26 years of age and full time student working part time to help sustain myself and my family. I believe I represent a considerable number of citizens in my position as a renter. We have been at the mercy of landlords in some cases our whole lives. We rent from landlords in T&T and our peace of mind and lively hood are being held ransom by renters and landlords who see us as cash cows.
We the working citizens of T&T who are not fortunate to have a home of our own or receive a government house understand our position and work towards better, but I believe that it is a breach of our constitutional right as a citizens of this country to be bullied by a landlord who has a get rich quick scheme. A landlord who exploits hard working citizens by unjustly raising rents and charges exorbitant fees for “miniscule spaces”. We refuse to be taken advantage of simply because we need a roof over our heads and can’t find another alternatives. This is but a small voice seeking justice and equality
Do we not have rights, who will protect the single parent mother who didn’t finish school and is threatened with rent increases every six months? What about the students who need apartments and pay over 3500 dollars per month for a studio in addition to their university fees. According to ministry of legal affairs there is no functioning board of rental assessment since 2001. We need help Madame Prime Minister and as such we are creating this petition simply to show you how many people are suffering at the hands of these injustices.
I hope that in this democratic society the voice of the people can be heard and some initiative can be constructed to alleviate this problem. Please see petition attached.

I have been reading the messages in the comments and the stories about these living conditions are truly heartbreaking. It confirms that the struggle I face as a student is shared by so many people across our islands who are being pushed to the breaking point by greedy landlords.

Seeing this much momentum growing behind our cause proves that I am not alone in this fight against these unfair housing practices. It gives me real hope to see so many of you standing together because you know exactly how painful it is to be exploited by a greedy landlord just to keep a roof over your head.

Landlords are holding us at ransom. I have been renting for 10 years now and landlords increase rent without fail but the issues in the apartments are never addressed. I have moved 6 times for various reasons such as faulty electrical, non functional water pump, leaving roof, sketchy yard workers in so called nice areas...I am fed up. Please help us the tenants.
I am renting from a landlord who has seperated an upstairs house into two rental units and we have to share our electric bill the rent is too high for such a small studio and she doesn't fix anything.
In full support. Have been renting over 20 yrs in 6 different places. My rent started off at $350 a mth my current rent is $3,400 inclusive of all bills except cable...
Renters desperately need the board and there need to be restrictions and guidelines to follow wgen building apartments just like Town and Country. Some apartments have one window that is a no no. Also Landlords must register with the board if not then they are not allowed to lease apartments
Just as there is a minimum wage, there should be a minimum rent cost. someone on minimum wage cannot afford to rent by themself. This will then perpetuate poverty and dependence on the state especially single mothers. For older people who are so educated and experienced, politicians really dont think. Try and change that reputation
Lordlords are mistreating tenants
I rent and pay the most rent in the building I am in yet I'm victimized by the landlord and other tenants

All of the points on this petition is valid and also I would like to add that some landlords do not even offer peace of mind to their renters such as no noise after a certain hour or coming to fix a pipe if it is broken
