We can hold space, at the same time, for both sides of the story. The breath of monoculture and holding onto the current reductive stance and narrow recall only reduces our communities' chance to embrace the diversity and know a true multicultural awareness, that includes and places indigenous history proudly front and centre!
Let's learn from the spirited caretakers who came before us, seek their voices and untold, yet to be heard stories. To be brave, open eyes and acknowledge all who came before us, who we have to thank for our prosperity by naming all places with a shared historical perspective.
Including Dja Dja Warrung knowledge and aknowledgement of the place we walk on is a natural step that needs to be taken and reflected in our everyday life, starting with the names of places is powerful educational tool that our local council holds the message stick on. Share the message of first nation people, be the change and leaders we need by taking steps here, on this land, towards a Makarrata, listen to the statement from the heart. It will make a stronger, kinder and wiser community for us all.

I would recommend an audit of all street names in the Council area to ascertain the history of the namesake and why that person should be acknowledged.

Ongoing conversation about whether there is dual language or complete changeover to indigenous names would be valuable.

I think there needs to be a general greater awareness of the Indigenous history within our region, with the possibility of information provided in locations like along the Campaspe River Walk. I hope that moves like this become easier and relatively non-controversial, as I believe we can view the history of the area recognising the achievements of all peoples as well as the problems, because history contains both.

Indigenous name places are unique to Australia and the local region and their use should be encouraged. I'm all for renaming, especially replacing a name which has been implicated in violence, racism or corruption.

Personally I think you should go further than the dual naming requested in this petition. People involved in murder shouldn't be celebrated

We should take a lead from NZ which has many indigenous place names for towns. There are many dual names for mountains and the indigenous name is always first!

Yes. It would be very helpful to have markers on streets that indicate which country you are on or borders between shared countries. Having indigenous names helps us keep our unique history alive. We live in such an amazing country and yet we have forgotten so much - let’s try keep what’s left alive and relevant.

I am a descendant of the Ngurai Illum Wurrung people, and the Dja Dja Wurrung people - 7 generations down from when this happened to our people. Each generation has had to deal in some way with the long term effects that began in those times. It's wonderful to see that the devastations of those times are being learnt and recognised by people of today, especially from the younger non Aboriginal Australians. People like Hutton, (Yaldwyn, Ebden, and Munro also complicit) were murderers who profited from the massacres. They should not be remembered as heros. A big thanks to all those who support telling the Truth of that era. I wish this would happen everywhere around Australia where massacres and other atrocities have occurred . But please remember this important part of healing, "no-one alive today is responsible for what happened in those times - it is not your fault". Live freely, live truthfully, and live with love and hope, just as we do, that Australia becomes the country that proudly lives in unity with all its people and its past. Thank you for your support. Uncle Vincent Peters.

The real Australian hIstory needs be brought out into the light if we are to begin reconciliation and repair.
