As a baseball fan I enjoyed watching Jose Fernandez pitch. I wish I would have payed more attention but I will strive to be more like him. Great person and a very hard loss.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and was in ninth grade when my mother woke me up with the news of Roberto Clemente's death on New Year's Day. It seemed absolutely surreal. After all this time it still does. Through the years I have taken my children to Pittsburgh to visit his statue and park. My children know all about him.
A fine man.
Images from that tragedy are locked in my memory, a photo of his young son kissing a picture of the father he would never touch again, his teammates gathered in shock and sorrow.
I have lived in south Florida for more than 25 years. I know the story of Jose Fernandez well. This young man was a shining example of a person who yearned for freedom, loved his family and valued his community.
Future generations of south Floridians should know all about him too.
Pittsburgh has a Bridge and Park named for Roberto Clemente.
South Florida has stadiums bearing the names of seemingly inter changeable commercial sponsors.
The Marlins play in Marlins Park.
There is no doubt that the number of Jose Fernandez will be retired.
When it is, it would be most appropriate and fitting for it to be announced that it will hang in Jose Fernandez Park.
Some decisions are made in times of despair and sorrow that seem impetuous. Not this one.
Given what I experienced 43 years ago, I am certain it would be the right thing to do.
