Considerating the removal of the word is not enough. It is offensive and disheartening that that word is still considered appropriate considering the pain its use has caused.

I am appalled that this even has to be a petition. How is it possible that these names survived for so long? How is it possible that someone has to even ask.

I am shocked that in this day and age such references still exist. While at the time of the naming of these geographical locales, Quebec may have been so engaged in its racism toward black people to not even recognize the inappropriate nature of these names, one would hope that by now, the hurtful, damaging, and racist nature of these names would be fully recognized, and will be addressed immediately. That no one in government (whether municipal or provincial) has considered such changes earlier is indeed a embarrassment to all Canadians. It needs to be corrected and apologized for, now.

Quebec gov should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this in the first place

J'ai peine à croire que la motivation pour prendre une telle action nécessite une pétition. Ne sommes nous pas en 2015?!

It is offensive to acknowledge the brutality of slavery with the demeaning continuation of the same. This epithet was used to subjugate human beings to inhumane conditions. To continue using this name is disrespectful to Black community..

I just remembered that in 1972 vacationing in Les Îles de la Madeleine, we came across a place called La butte au nègre - the shore where a slave had died and was buried by the Madelinots. According to a legend the Federal government had wanted to built a road over it and each time the wind covered it with sand. People thought it was haunted and the road was detoured. I wonder if it still exists.
Best of luck. Enough is enough. Let's clean up our language.

So embarrassing that Canada fails to have corrected this foul and dehumanizing part of our past.

Just when I thought I knew everything about Canadian black history. This is the first time that I have heard the N-word to describe a place within Canada. Disgusting!

Disgusting to hear this especially from people who constantly cry about how they've been wronged

Please remove these offensive names. They have no place in a civilized society.
