I am demanding this statute be taken down as it is a disgrace to a beautiful city. I am from Shelby NC and it is hurtful to know that my hometown would allow such a figure to sit on such sacred ground. It’s time for our community to stand in solidarity and respect all citizens no matter race or gender. It’s an ugly past but I believe Shelby is strong enough to create a beautiful thriving future. In light and love.

I’m from North Carolina and am all for conserving our history, but monuments should be for recognizing greatness or tragedy. The instances listed above do neither. Please remove and rename.

Take these symbolic reminders of hatred, oppression, and ignorance down please. Our past is embarrassing, we should not have monuments glorifying the pain we inflicted, nor should POC of color have to be reminded of what was done to their ancestors and that we somehow think these monsters were heros.

As a native of Shelby, it is sickening to know that the road that serves as the major artery for traffic in the city is named after a man that had such disdain for people that look like me. Renaming this road would be a first step in making black people feel welcome in a city that’s supposed to be about pleasant living.
This has no place being memorialized!
