I am not a resident of Cleveland county, but I am a resident of North Carolina. It is my sincere desire that all vestiges of this bleak and evil period in our history be relegated to sad memory and cautionary texts with NO place of honor or memorial in the public space.

I would support replacinng the monument on the square with a statue of one whose presence would inspire.

There are two options: remove the statue in an act of anti-racism or leave it up in an act of deliberate racism. Those are the only options; it’s one or the other.

Cleveland County and Shelby have a wonderful, eclectic, and vibrant history. We can find two other individuals to honor. Get rid of these celebrations of a shameful past. Show how far we have come since those evil days.

As a local to this area, I can fully back these ideas. We need to stop putting up monuments to hate.

I believe it would very hurtful in a time like this if Shelby could not recognize the terrible stain these landmarks are leaving on our community. For a small community like ours I believe it should be no problem to come together and agree on removing indecent shadows of a cruel legacy.

Many civil war statues of confederates were resurrected well after the civil war and only done so as a sign of racism and as a painful reminder to those who would have been oppressed by such men. To fully realize the American promise that all men are created equal, such statues need to come down from public spaces and no longer be honored and revered. Put them in a museum maybe, but take them away from the public eyes. You don’t see statues of Hitler in Germany. We shouldn’t have statues of slave owners and those who fought for slavery in this country. Replace it with a statue of a slave to memorialize those whose backs our country’s economy was built on.

Growing up here I remember seeing klan rally’s on the square. This does nothing but promote fear and hatred.

Thank you for a well stated petition and that the monument should be preserved by those by who are dedicated to the preservation of various historical monuments and other items. Tamera Cox, M.D. made some brilliant points in promoting the relocation of the monument.

It's irresponsible and disrespectful to American citizens to let these monuments to racism remain. It's unbelievable that this hasn't already been rectified.
