A very informative history read.
Definitely support the removal of the statue. Shelby should be happy to remove such an offensive statue, which represents such hate & oppression against black citizens of Cleveland County.

Thank you Jonathan. I was raised in rural Cleveland County from the early 1960s to the mid 1970s and I was never taught any of this history. I still visit Shelby frequently and have a more enlightened view of the old courthouse square and a street I drove on a million times without know its namesake's background. Good luck getting this accomplished.

I was fortunate to have met Jonathan Jones when he was in middle school and became friends with my step-daughter Morgan thru AUMC. He attended UNC where my son Matt graduated and kept me up to date with
Jonathan's sports articles with the Daily Tar Heel. I have followed his career with Charlotte Obsever and Sports Illustrated. After just reading the piece he wrote about the Conderate monument in Shelby, I found it to be enlightening and surpassed the sports articles(they are excellent) that I have read written by him. My biggest regret after reading such an inspiring piece is that I knew little about the information he shared and wish I had been better informed while I worked and lived there. Although a. Only a small gesture I proudly sign the petitionand hope the counties leaders Lead and remove the monument! Thank-you Jonathan and all involved.
Sincerely,
James h. Hines, Jr.

I am disheartened to realize it takes a petition for our government to do the right thing. Please remove the statue immediately!

Having been raised in Cleveland County, where many of my family members still live, I am ashamed of the monument and what it symbolizes.

A few years ago, I discovered that a great-great-great grandfather of mine fought for the Confederacy. There should be NO monuments to those who fought to preserve slavery or white supremacy.

For our county to ensure a bright future for all of its residents this monument needs to come down. Put it in a museum somewhere with its terrible history explained.
