This should have happened years ago. I am appalled that it has not yet happened. I am hoping that the monument will be removed soon. My dear friend Dorothy Duffy, who valiantly fought for the removal, is now singing with the angels. I hope we can do this for her and all of the people who have been so egregiously wronged.

I grew up in Shelby. Remove the statue, change the name.
"Growing up, we whites always said "the South shall rise again, "and it now appears the South has not only risen but has colonized great swaths of the American mind in the process. I have no clue where this story eventually ends, but right now the tale it tells is a sad one indeed." ***
That said, removal and change work toward the truth and only the truth will make all of us free.

Born and raised in Shelby NC, it's time to remove these monuments that rebelled against these United States of America! Lets make this nation stand on the principles it wrote in the constitution. Love always wins over hate, may the truth continue to be told!

Just finished reading Jonathan Jones article about Cleveland County's shameful post Civil War history. As a former resident of this county, I strongly agree this statue should be removed.

I like Eddie S. Glaude's _Begin Again_ agenda: set the facts straight, interpretation matters so do it wisely and fully, and then understand reception of a racist past. What kind of monument should stand in the place where a pro-slavery past put this one in Charlotte? It seems to me, this is the process Charlotte and many other cities in the confederate past are doing. Keep on, ya'll.

It is a shame that we continue to celebrate images of subjugation and calling it patriotic. I love visiting NC, but will not spend my tourism dollars in Shelby while the statue remains.

I believe the Jim Crow is over and we should not have reminders of those times but should move forward. To argue that this erases history is wrong since the monuments themselves distort history and erase others' history.

This statue is an embarrassment to Shelby. Unfortunately, visiting Shelby I have met so many white people who are very rascist and cling to this statue as some kind of assurance that there is an official endorsement of their prejudices. That is what is horrific about a monument like this, it gives the air of authority and legitimacy to an evil institution.
When I visited Shelby I talked with some protesters at the statue and likened it to similar statues of murderous dictators used in other countries, sculptural propaganda that intimidate and terrorize people who are victims of genocide.
