Remove the Summit Personalized Learning Program from the Fairview Park City School District! Bring Education Back!

Summit PLP is a way for Fairview Park Schools to artificially boost their scores for their students. As an alumnus from Fairview, I have been told by friends of mine as well as my little brother who has participated in "basecamp" that the program is doing absolutely nothing for their education. It has been admitted by students that if they did not know the answer to something in Summit they would ask their friends or just look it up on the internet rather than asking a teacher and actually trying to learn it. This type of learning is not the type of learning we should want for our students. One of the most important parts of an education is the interactions and relationship between a teacher and his/her students. Summit takes away this teacher-student aspect and puts a computer in front of the student allowing them to do whatever they want on the internet without staying focused on their schoolwork. If Fairview does not soon remove this program from its schools they will find that their artificially boosted scores will drop significantly when students who are not learning because of Summit take state exams like the OGT or the college entrance exams like the ACT and SAT. Regardless of the fact that some students may actually be able to learn this way, a large majority of the students cannot learn this way and say that they hate the program and they hate school. Having students who hate going to school because they hate how they are learning leads to students not wanting to learn. This program is ruining the education of students in Fairview is could lead to an entire group of students graduating college without the necessary skills and knowledge to enter college or even the real world, is that what we want?

As faculty member for graduate programs competency based education can have its place as a supplemental tool for learning, this method should not be the entire basis of curriculum. Disappointed that the school district continues to support this method as the basis for learning.

I would really like Basecamp to be gone because I feel like students with a hard copy and daily return dates work better then having a blue line shadow them.

I would like to thank the teachers and counselors for wasting their summer to get a free trip to California with their family. Basecamp was very useful and helpful allowing me to be more ready and prepared for the upcoming school year. I transferred from fairview to another school because i felt like i was ready for the real world where their is no due dates in life or work. I now learned that their is no such thing as procrastinating, because you cant really procrastinate when there isnt any due dates

I think that it is grate that i get to go to school and play games all day and get straight A's. Then collages will really know how good i am at the games i've played. Thank you basecamp. -Luke Chambers

The summit platform is something I believe is an education system in which kids who lack skills can succeed in. I, being a strong student who likes to be challenged, believes the summit is the system we need in our school, and if so, then not in advanced classes.

St. Angela has learned how to capitalize on this I successful way of learning. They have a slogan on their lawn stating something along the lines of "their teaching still has the human touch"!!!!

Don't take the person out of personalized learning. Children of all ages need a teacher to connect to and to inspire them. They need a cheerleader and someone that can recognize that confused face and then step in to help. They need a mentor to initially set classroom/work goals and help with a plan of attack. They need that funny teacher or knowledgeable teacher to keep them engaged. You can't leave that important part out and expect all students to succeed.

I agree with the petition as well as other's comments. Many students do not have the maturity at these grades to manage their own time. We have always been active in our child's education but this has become a burden to our household and we are not looking forward to the future. I believe the administration has also altered the 7th grade math curriculum twice during the year by dropping power focus areas. I believe once approx. middle of the year and then once at the end of the year. I find this interesting and can only speculate and assume that this change decreased the number of students with incompletions and reduced the number of summer school attendees. There was no communication about this to my knowledge. It was there one day and gone the next. What happens to that curriculum? Will it be added to the beginning of 8th grade math? There are teachers that are not happy with this but cannot speak up for fear of jeopardizing their jobs. Not to mention that pediatricians and doctors recommend common sense limitations of screen time for young people that this program exceeds before they even get home from school. What about the relationships with teachers that help instill in many children a love for a certain field? How many of you were inspired by a teacher? How many of you were inspired by a laptop? I would also like to know the results of the recent survey asking for feedback. If you want to stir the pot, ask the administration for the results of the previous survey that was not completed by most parents. Use freedom of information to dig deeper into administration details. Do Not Give Up. I value my child's education too much to ignore this and I suspect you do as well if you are reading this. At the very least, I expect to vote against any school board officials next election.

Three of my children participated in this program this past year (6th, 7th and 9th graders). Their attitudes and enthusiasm toward school deteriorated as the year went on. They did not feel they truly learned the content, they felt disconnected from the teachers and were stressed. I just don't think this type of independent, self-pacing learning is fully appropriate for this age level. In theory, personalized learning sounds great, but in practice, it did not play out well. I know this program was adopted with the best intentions. I am hopeful that we can work as a community to problem solve together and restore a positive learning environment for students, teachers and parents.

Although my son learned how to muster through a terrible situation and come out on top, I do believe this program needs to be eliminated.
