Remove the anti-homeless 'rock garden' under the San Diego freeway

No Clearning camping without safe lot or shelter bed 24 hours stay inside.

THIS HAS TO STOP!!!!! THIS ROCK GARDEN IS NOT A GARDEN, IS UGLY AF, IS INHUMANE, AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL. EVERY PERSON IN THIS COUNTRY HAS THE RIGHT TO REST AND TRAVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF THIS INHUMANE, EXPENSIVE, SLY MEASURE IS THE ONLY SOLUTION HERE!

Stop spending money on prevention, and spend it on solving the problem.

This is ridiculous.. someone should go to all city officials homes and install rocks in all their beds... You want homeless off the streets pay attention to Utah among many other places who are using abandoned buildings to house the homeless as well as making tiny homes out of recycled materials... Instead you waste money to instal rocks and push the homeless out into the community. Shame on the San Diego Mayor, Shame on city council, Shame on SDPD.

Want to do something about the homeless? Make it easier for one to acquire housing. My husband and I were homeless in San Diego for ten years. We showered. We made sure we cleaned up after ourselves. We do not do drugs. We didn't drink alcohol while we were homeless. We didn't have pets while we were homeless. My husband works, and yet that wasn't enough to get us housing. We didn't have the proper credit rating. We didn't have proper rental history. We didn't have proper references. Once you are homeless, it's near impossible to change that factor in your life. It took us ten years to secure housing. We lived in three places in Downtown San Diego, where about ninety percent of my husband's paycheck had went to rent. The landlord's only explanation for such high rent? "You're living in Downtown San Diego." I wasn't aware that such a thing was an amenity that warranted adding an additional four hundred dollars a month to the rent of a single confining room. The first place burned from within due to a resident frying chicken with a clutter of newspapers near the fryer, so we were forced to move. The second place, The Baltic Inn, we were there for two years until they were bought out by a company and that company evicted everyone. The third? The same thing, after awhile. We were facing homelessness again, so we moved to Tijuana, Mexico so we would not be homeless again. We worked too hard for that. We had to ex-patriot, and yet, we shouldn't have had to. There is nothing that regulates the rental businesses within San Diego. Not all homeless people are like what Mr. Acevedo has described; but at the same token, many of them are. I have seen first hand how many do not want to do anything for themselves. However, there are some who do. If a renter had given my husband and I a chance, we would have proven to be very responsible and reliable tenants. Alas, none had done so until we had moved to Tijuana.

Waste of money. Spend it on a solution.

As a resident, these rocks ARE WELCOME. Everyone is entitled to believe what is humane and what is not. All of your opinions should be respected no matter what they are. With that said, PLEASE do not make statements representative of the immediate community if you do not live in the community where these rocks are. I personally have heard from more supporters of this project than those expressing their ethical disdain. Usually those opinions are from parts of the city which are not affected in the great numbers East Village/Barrio Logan/Sherman Heights is. If someone needs a different ethical target, hop in your car and drive to the corner of 16th and K. Particularly early in the morning! There you will find Logan Liquors (ironically in East Village but named Logan for whatever reason). Get out of your car and go to the liquor store to watch serial inebriates (alcoholics) further poison themselves and also the willing liquor store owners who help them find the grave faster. Look up and down 16th Ave to see the brown paper bags filled with their product. And then look no more than a 1/2 block up at the Volunteers of America Sobering Center (drunk tank). If you are drunk, as soon as you sleep it off, you only have to wander have a 1/2 block down to Logan Liquors to continue the death cycle. So everyday while some may first see rocks that weren't there before make it easier for local residents, what I sadly see is something much, much worse where others are making money off of slowly (and legally) killing the least fortunate of our city. I don't have a one-stop solution but I can tell you the focus on these rocks takes away from your individual, well-intentioned efforts to contact a District 3 Councilperson, Alcohol Beverage Commission, whoever to put a stop to the legal, slow blood-letting of our most vulnerable individuals! But as for the rocks, like it or not, those rocks make our community happy.

All of that funding should have gone towards helping others in need.

There has to be a better solution.

In that particular area of town, you're not any safer no matter what you do or where you walk...

One these people have to sleep some where two these rocks are dangerous they are an accident waiting to happen a skater or person on a bike could fall and be seriously injured if they land on these rocks putting them where people exits there cars is a huge trip hazard why would they city create something with the potential for so much harm this was not well thought out at all.

This petition nails it. The citizens of Sherman Heights asked for something to be done about the number of homeless people seeking shelter beneath the I-5 overpass. The decision to respond to that request with this outrageously expensive, inhumane installation comes from the mayor - who obviously just wants to make the homeless disappear, and despite lots of political grandstand, takes no real initiative in actually solving the problem. That would require admitting the ugly truth, that this city has been thwarting efforts to create affordable housing for decades. Now we reap what they sowed - there is no place for people to go. People falling on hard times, families, women, elderly people, disabled people, people with mental illness, the throwaways of our greed driven system - after they are forced out of downtown, expect them to be camping in your neighborhood next as we do the heartless homeless shuffle.

This is appalling. Then create more homeless shelters.

This is wrong we need desperately need a new.mayor!!!!

I would be willing to bet more people want these rocks here than don't. Didn't the city put these there because of the hundreds of complains?
