When I first moved to Boston 20 years ago, I used to work at Park Square. I remember the shock I felt when I when I first saw that statue. It certainly doesn’t look like an emancipated black man when he’s half-dressed, on his knees seemingly enslaved by Lincoln. It was uncomfortable for me to look at, and I’m a white woman! I can’t imagine how I would feel if I was black looking at it- totally not cool. I agree, it has to go!

Yes. I’m for the alteration or for the removal and replacement with something more representative of what the statute was hopefully put there for originally.

We could use this as an opportunity to commission a more equitable statue done by a black artist. Emancipation is genuinely something to celebrate and the statue should reflect that.

As an artist, this depiction of emancipation of people who were never slaves, but were enslaved by racists, is a failure for all the reasons the petition author wrote. If this was an art class assignment to depict emancipation, I’d give it an F. It depicts subjugation.

I live in Cambridge and I didn't even know this statue existed til today. It certainly wasn't adding anything to my life. Looking at it, I'm not surprised that Frederick Douglass objected to it even at the time it was made. Sometimes public art is inappropriate, and becomes even more inappropriate with time! It happens. It's time for this statue to go, we don't want it.
