Art reflects the times we live in - and while art also tells our history this piece which could show the strength of a freed slave and the resilience of slaves and is misleading and portrays an image of whites dominating blacks. This Statue is a hurtful reminder (in a daily way for those that walk by it) of the trauma and hurtful part of history and represents blacks as weak, afraid and being dominated - and less than and even animal like by having the image of the slave crouching and with chains. There are many ways to acknowledge history through art - and the process should include all involved before deciding on the appropriate images.
