Why do white people want this statue? Do they find it self-congratulatory? I really think that’s the only reason.

This atrocity needs to go. The emancipation sculpture in the South End near Harriet Tubman is amazing and woman-created. This statue is degrading.

Tory's logical, well-thought out argument compelled me to look up the story of the statue (I used reputable, historical sources) and - Tory is 100% correct. Money from freed slaves was used to build this monument that was designed by a white man and built by Germans. The whole visual representation of emancipation was co-oped by white people.

There is no need to keep something around that causes pain and division. If you remove it there will be backlash but after a year after the dissenters will not remember and will have moved on. But if you don’t remove it those in pain will continue to feel uncared for and ignored. Such a simple thing to start the healing

I fully agree with this petition and would love to see an artist recommissioned to create a new piece that better exemplifies freedom. This statue is poorly conceived and has been controversial since its unveiling. I think even Lincoln would find it offensive ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Update monument to depict the free man standing, properly dressed, and shaking hands. Or retire the statue to a museum somewhere. Does not reflect our views of modern day society, instead it helps keep racism alive.
