Lincoln was a great man and one of the best presidents. The statue should replaced with Lincoln and the man both standing or any other way that is immediately clear about equality.

I walked by this in Boston one day last year and couldn't believe it. I had to look up its history. It was controversial from the beginning.

I’ve walked by this statue for many years, but only a few times a year. Every time I see it, I’m always disturbed by the complete disconnect and disrespect for who everyone depicted was. I wish it had been removed years ago, but it’s being hidden to most kept it around. I hope that no matter what replaces it’s, a way is found to also ensure that people actually encounter something better.

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Priclamation to end the Civil War. He had wanted to send freed slaves to African colonies to start their lives over and to compensate slave owners. He finally saw the light and passed 13th amendment outlawing slavery in all states. Thebstatue makes Lincoln look like a saint or Jesus. He was a great man, a great president, yes. Furthermore, why was this statue erected in 1920? What purpose would it have served at that time? Did African Americans feel particilarly free and equal to whites anywhere, including the North, at that time? Of course not. I imagine this statue would have served as a way to communicate white power, and to serve as a visual reminder of where African American citizens came from.
It’s time to remove the statue and replace it with something culturally sensitive.

Embarrassingly paternalistic and racist statue. Replace it with a statue of Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Freeman, or someone else who deserves recognition

I agree, black people should not be depicted on shackle and kneeling in front of Lincoln. If want to celebrate the emancipation of slavery there must be other way to represent that day. Artists present an authentic representation of how black people felt as slavery was abolished!!! Send it to Boston mayor Marty Walsh!!!
