The statue could be relocated to a museum where curators could educate the public on its history and why it is insulting. It should not be a monument in a public place, insulting passersby with this image.

I sent this email to Mayor Walsh from Ohio:
Honorable Mayor Walsh:
I write to you today from Washington County, Ohio, where there is talk of procuring a statue from Boston that some have petitioned to be removed because of the insensitive and harmful nature of a black man kneeling at the feet of his "savior" President Abraham Lincoln. While it can't be disputed the significant impact Lincoln had on the abolishment of slavery, I ask you today, on June 19th, to not consider sending this statue to us. Belpre, Ohio is predominantly white. While the Mid-Ohio Valley does have pockets of black communities, some very historical since we played a big part of the underground railroad, the members of that community have spoken out against this statue and those petitioning to have it brought here have not had an adequate discussion about it and what the symbolism means to the black community.
I ask respectfully that you cease any negotiations with Jeff Totten or any Belpre authorities (I don't think the Mayor is in favor, by the way) and keep the statue in Boston, in a museum, where it can be seen and studied with context. Not shipped off to Ohio where Boston can forget it, the Ohio bigots can embrace it and the local black community can shudder in silence over a monument to a white man with a black man kneeling at his feet.

Abraham Lincoln wasn’t interested in freedom for slaves; he made a financial move to benefit himself and those like him. He definitely isn’t worthy of being bowed down to like a god, especially not by ANYONE who’s Black. GET RID OF THIS DISGRACEFUL PIECE OF STONE!!!

I have never seen this in person and was horrified that this is a real actual statue in a major city. This is disgusting and beyond offensive. TEAR IT DOWN!!!
