A stronger and more meaningful depiction of black freedom needs to be put in this statues place now! This is gross & we can do better!

To those that are saying this is yet another example of white men oppressing black men. That this freed slave is still on his knees, so he represents white power over blacks. You are completely missing the point of the sculpture. Completely.
The slave is on his knees precisely because he represents slavery and oppression. HE IS NOT YET FREE. He is in a place between slavery and freedom. He is still wearing his shackles, but the chains are broken. It's a powerful message that, evidently, gets completely lost on those who can only see racism wherever they look. The statue should be an uplifting symbol for all, because it represents freedom from slavery - the opposite of slavery and oppression, even if you can't recognize that fact. But, go ahead and tear it down, because you don't understand the message. smh

This statue should do the following:
1. Placed in a museum to indicate all of the crazy things white people used to do back in the day like Tory said
2. Alter the statue and make the fictional black man hand shake Abe Lincoln
3. Demolish it into thin air.
