The famous Freedom Fighter Frederick Douglass was the keynote speaker for the original dedication ceremony in D.C. (April 14th, 1876). President Ulysses S. Grant was in attendance. John Cromwell, a Howard University historian, who was in the audience as well, recorded that Douglass said the statue "showed the Negro on his knees when a more manly attitude would have been indicative of freedom." I think this pretty much sums up why this statue can be taken down now and should've a long time ago.
I'd also like to add that these monuments are false testaments to men who are tyrannical and evil. We praise them for building a system that has sustained us all these generations, yet too many people neglect the painfully obvious fact that this great American Dream is built on the DELIBERATE SUPPRESSION OF BLACK PEOPLE AND THUS ALL OTHER MINOTIRIES! THIS COUNTRY HAS FORSAKEN THE VERY PEOPLE WHO BUILT THIS COUNTRY WITH OUR LITERAL BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS. WE WILL HAVE OUR JUSTICE!

This statue needs to come down asap - June 19 would be a good day to remove it. Mayor Walsh - are you listening? Bostonians should not have to look at a statue showing a Black man on his knees - and in a statue about "emancipation" no less! Take it down.

This statue perpetuates the myth of the white savior. It belongs in a museum, not out on the street with no analysis. We don’t need demeaning a image of a subservient black man kneeling at the feet of the benevolent white savior publicly displayed in our city. Let’s turn this around. We can do better, Boston.
