I’m sure when enacted this statue was well intentioned, but is actually highly offensive and inappropriate. Would love to see it replaced with a tribute to Black figures from history.

As the Gallery Director and Director of Arts on the Point at UMass Boston, I stand with this petition to remove this racist statue. It is offensive and belittling to the struggle that was faced by the millions of people who were forced into chattel slavery, and furthermore, adds insult to injury for Boston’s Black communities and the people from around the world who visit Boston every year. We all know very well that art in public spaces matter. It tells the world what Boston believes in, what stories we chose to tell, and how we want our histories and present to be represented. We must take this statue down from its pediment to prove the values that we hold dear as one city: equity, equality, and community based support that acknowledges BLACK LIVES MATTER.

Although Abraham Lincoln deserves to be honored, this image makes it look like little has changed for the one emancipated: still on his knees and begging. Kids deserve something better to look forward to.
