The event it commemorates should be remembered. Emancipation was a good first step for true freedom for people of color. However there has to be a better way to depict such an event besides highlighting the dominance of a white man over a black man.
I suggest a single black figure screaming out as he breaks the chains that bind his hands. The focus here is on the oppressed only. Not the oppressor.

I didn’t even know this was in Boston - take it down!! It’s time for our country to start calling out and recognizing what actually happened in history, and how horribly oppressive we still are to people of color in this country!

I had no idea this statue still existed. Frederick Douglass publicly objected to the original as a guest speaker at its unveiling in 1867(!). As a Bostonian, I'm sickened to find out that this exists in our city. It needs to go.

This is awful, problematic, and shows that Boston is not welcoming to POCs. I'm sure collaboration with the Museum of African American History can come up with something more uplifting

A man on his knees does not look very "free." I worked in this neighborhood for years, and never even noticed the statue. No one will miss it when it's gone.
