As a white woman having grown up and now raising my own children in the city of Boston, I have abhorred this monument for my entire life. This patronizing symbol to me represents how the story of emancipation continues to glorify the white savior, and how the end of slavery has simply translated into socially sanctioned shackles for the descendants of slaves to this day. Let’s replace this degrading story with a monument that calls on our highest ideals of equality, and tells the story of endurance and resistance from which true emancipation may emerge.

This statue is racist and re-inscribes the white savior narrative while portraying Black people as helpless beneficiaries. It is paternalistic and ahistorical.
