This replica statue portrays the freed man in a diminutive manner that upholds racist tropes and stereotypes of the time and is a painful reminder of the dehumanizing treatment and popular depiction of Black and African-American people in our country. Boston needs to do better

This statue is a representation of black oppression, and a s a white person, makes me uncomfortable and wrongly depicts history. Statues should make people who went through extreme hardship to look strong and resilient, not on their knees and begging.

In this day in time it is necessary to build monuments, statues , and art that uplift and promote the victories in the Black community. This statue does quite the opposite. To be depicted on one's knees and in chains is not an image that speaks to freedom. We can do better than this statue. We must be better than this statue.

This statue needs to go, like statues of Confederate soldiers down south. The sculptor, Thomas Ball, was such a bigot, he wouldn't allow a Black man to enter his studio and model. Please take it away.
