Remove Cape Girardeau, Missouri's Monuments to Union Soldiers

The Confederate Monument behind the Old Courthouse is a piece of history. If history is removed then we are doomed to repeat it!

If we ignore history, we are doomed to repeat it.

Leave our History alone. You would be pissed if I came and took your History away from you, leave mine alone too!!!!!

If you're so adamant about taking down this part of history, then you should take down the colored soldier statue also.

This is the path you have chosen City Council and “Historic Preservation Committee”

Common sense tells us history must not be extinguished, it is a means for learning and understanding.

Remove all monuments

Confederate Monuments were made to honor the dead!

Northern boys and confederate soldiers fought valiantly for their cause and our future of America! Both need to be remembered and honored with valor!!! God bless America and god bless both great men that unfortunately had to fight against one another.

Equal representation- it’s something our fore fathers fought for; you know those men who helped provide a free nation for us. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. What most folks don't know is the Confederate Veterans are also American Veterans by acts of the US Congress. That's why to this day the VA can provide a headstone for a Confederate Veteran who doesn't have one. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

With great sadness i sign this petition. But it is something i must do. If the monument honoring the Confederate soldiers of the area must be removed so shall the Union. Historic Preservation Commission...you are a damn joke...preserve all history or change your name. I commend the one counsel member who voted to keep the Confederate monument at least he took the time to learn the history behind it and its importance.

If monuments can only remain standing in Cape Girardeau when they are not offensive and/or when their historical integrity is intact, then the remaining two Civil War monuments *must* be removed. The memorial fountain was dedicated in honor of "The Soldiers of the Civil War." Thus that memorial can be considered to honor both Union and Confederate soldiers. Clearly, that is an offense; therefore, the monument must be removed. (The historical integrity of the fountain monument is also compromised because the Union soldier statue at the top of it is not the original statue. It had to be replaced due to damage some years back.) After the fountain is removed, and before it is placed anywhere else, it must be contextualized to describe the war crimes conducted by Union militia against the citizens of Missouri. The James Ivers statue also represents the Union, which is a clear offense to those Missourians whose civilian family members were killed by Union soldiers. And importantly, the James Ivers statue is being moved to allow for construction on the new city hall. Thus, that statue is now ahistorical, given that its historical integrity has been compromised. (According to the historic preservation commission, the Confederate monument was "removable" because it no longer retained its historic integrity. It had to be moved to prevent its destruction when the new bridge was constructed. The same can now be said of the James Ivers statue.)

Its wrong to destroy things that honor or remember our history, blue or gray

The civil war and the thought of United States civilians, neighbors and families killing each other offends me. Remove all traces of the civil war so that i dont have to be constantly reminded of the atrocities of history.
