This is not to say that projects should not be implemented in education.

  1. PBL is unbalanced between classes, as the scale, quality, and creativity needed greatly differs between classes.
  2. PBL prioritizes presenting over students actually learning the topics they were provided.
  3. Students will prefer to make their presentation more appealing to their audience rather than actually taking the time to understand their topic.
  4. PBL activities are often assigned without the students having any prior knowledge of the topic.
  5. The grading may be subjective on presentation instead of the understanding the student has of the subject.
  6. Less confident and/or quieter students are at a disadvantage, because presentation skills likely make up a large percentage of the grade.
  7. Many students can become apathetic to their projects because of the demanding amounts of time and motivation needed for completion
  8. The dates these are assigned are not always beneficial (some teachers assign these under a month away from the showcase).
  9. Some teachers are ineffective when it comes to properly guiding students through new topics through means of vague/quick instructions.
  10. Teachers that are not properly prepared for the time and resources students need will find their students having projects with little to no joy and/or effort put into them.
  11. In some group PBLs, students may piggyback off of others in order to get better grades without having to put in any effort.
  12. PBL was not active for years and the student morale was reportedly alright with that.
  13. After years without PBL being used, newer students may feel overwhelmed by the sudden implementation of PBL. In fact, they may perform worse in PBL than in regular lecture-based learning.
  14. Forcing students to participate in an after-school activity is strange, as students may have other duties such as with their family, occupation, or other activities that make them unable to attend (but it can be assumed that there are contingencies to this).
  15. Regular projects prior to the implementation of PBL were as effective and ineffective as PBL, without having to have an entire event dedicated to PBL.
  16. Naviance and other programs (including regular projects) already encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

If these were not enough for PBL to be removed, then the Administration should streamline and optimize the structure of PBL.
