This petition is for the removal of ONLY the essay from the AP Literature 2017 Capstone project. The extensive time needed to excel in this project is hindering the little time we have to prepare for AP exams and our chances of qualifying for college credit are greatly reduced. We are AP students and are able to handle a large workload, but not to this extent at such a crucial time, but we know that a capstone is part of the end of the year assignment for AP Literature. We are not asking to completely get rid of the capstone, we are asking that the workload may be reduced by removing only the essay in order to allow us ample and deserved time to study for our AP exams.

I have sent a formal request to the department chair detailing the specific time constraints caused by the essay component. We are waiting for a response regarding their review process for the current syllabus.

The administration has acknowledged the surge in petition signatures and agreed to a meeting next week to discuss the capstone workload. I am currently preparing a formal memorandum detailing how the essay requirement interferes with exam preparation to present during that session.

With about 3 weeks left until AP testing, it is paramount that students are given significant time to prepare. The capstone essay is an extensive addition to the project as a whole and for most students, this impedes the time they have to study for their 3 to 6 upcoming AP exams. These exams are financially crucial for many families and their kids and are of the upmost priority. A 17/18 year old can only handle so much in a healthy way which is why we ask for your consideration.

The essay is a little much for the students to focus on our presentations. As long as we do a presentation, doesn't that prove our abilities to comprehend modern art? Isn't that what school is for? Not to bombard the students with loads of work??
This is true. With 6 AP tests coming up and even the AP lit one in about two weeks, I feel my essay will hinder study time and will end up being of low quality.

I have 4 AP Exams and I really do not have any time to write a well written essay for this. I believe the project already is a lot of work for the end of the year and since the essay is due just before the AP Lit Exam, I believe just studying for the test will have a lot better impact on myself and others instead of doing another essay.
