Greater Parental Discretion in the Homer Public Library

The world is changing as it always has. You cannot keep young people from discussing identity. You, as a parent, attempting to control 100% of the ideas and conversations your child has, is impossible. Why not talk to them and discuss the world? They will encounter ideas that differ from your own eventually. Why not prepare them in stead of corral them?? Go ban yourself.

I’d rather my children read about happy people being nice to one another than see hateful petitions like this one cross my eyes. Please rethink your petition, and consider opening your minds to the possibility that your own children might grow up to be someone you don’t expect. Will you hate them as much as you hate these children’s books?

I will not allow bigotry and hate to rule our town, and I hope others will join me in speaking up against this petition. Knowledge is power, and open access to literature is one of the few freedoms women and children have in this country. Don’t step in to limit knowledge about something that you don’t understand.

Was bigotry a part of daily life in the home you grew up in? Do you continue to accept that as the norm? Do you forgive bigotry in some family members more than others? Do the "rules" about what gets said — and what doesn't — change from one home to another? Who shares your views opposing such bigotry? Working together, will you find greater success in speaking out?

I don’t think there is a lot of indoctrination going on in the books you listed. Are you confusing the LGTBQ with a different alphabet organization? Maybe try not going to the library, maybe that would help. Try using Libby instead.

Wouldn’t really want to live in the world that you are presenting here; I’d rather the children learn to love rather than hate. Much like I hated that whole middle part of Moby Dick on the history of whaling, mostly because it was so boring. What books are we banning next?

This is the worst petition I’ve seen this month. Learn how to spell, and let your poor kids read whatever the hell they want to.

Have fun explaining to your kids why they can’t check out the brightly colored books. Free speech for everyone, and freedom of access for all ages. Librarians literally cannot stop your children from checking out those books when you aren’t there.

I thank god (the one that professes to love all *his children) that I was raised with the influence of many flaming homosexuals in my life, who, in spite of their best efforts, failed to “indoctrinate” or “recruit” anyone into their “ideology.” I’m not sure who’s responsible for your indoctrination, but identity is not a choice, it’s simply who you are. This terminology you employ seeks to politicize and marginalize, and, god forbid your own children identify as what you’ve deemed “other,” is far more dangerous than the inclusive and loving books you seek to banish. It's one thing to have this 'helpful' information available, and it's another thing to push it in our children's faces. With all respect, we are not asking you to exterminate the LGBTQXYZ community, we are asking you to move these books in the appropriate section. Good grief.
