As a woman, I no longer feel safe, and it’s heartbreaking to say that I felt safer living in the Middle East than I do in South Africa. People often ask why so many South Africans are leaving, and it’s not because our country isn’t beautiful it truly is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The real issue is crime, which seems to be getting worse every day.
How are we expected to live like this? It feels like people do as they please because there are little to no consequences. Our country is not taken seriously, and it often seems like the government is not doing enough to protect its citizens. This creates an environment where criminals whether involved in drug trafficking, murder, or rape act without fear, believing they will get away with it.
When you compare this to countries in the Middle East, the difference is clear. Laws are strict, and people are fully aware of the consequences of their actions. During my time there, I never once feared for my life. I could walk to the shop at 2 a.m. without hesitation something I would never feel safe doing here.
Many of us believe that stricter consequences, including the reinstatement of the death penalty, could act as a deterrent to serious crimes. It’s also difficult to understand why prisoners are given opportunities like free education, while many hardworking students with excellent results cannot pursue their studies due to financial limitations.
We want to feel safe in our own country. We want to live without fear. South Africa has so much potential... why must we be known as one of the most dangerous places in the world, instead of one of the safest?
