A good art teacher is hard to find. If you’ve got one, keep her (or him) This is the 21st century and the parent who objected on the basis of the artist’s portfolio needs to grow up. The teacher didn’t open her portfolio to the students. And if a student sees a nude in a piece of artwork, it will be nothing that student has not seen on social media, TV or movies.

Aurora seems to bring exactly the kind of conditions our kids need to support exploring creativity, curiosity, and artistic expression.

This is a simply ridiculous decision and the parent who complained should do some serious self-reflecting

Aurora needs to be in place teaching art at Newton. This is totally wrong her being asked to withdraw. She is an important, and needed part the creative lives in our children in Strafford.

If you don't want your children to see something, pay attention to what your children are doing. Don't punish others because you're too lazy to supervise your children.

We want to educate our children to be broad minded, discerning, exposed to a wide variety of views and experiences with the ability to make their own judgements with knowledge balance and compassion. To find nudes in an artist’s portfolio is like finding sand on a beach. By all means reinstate Aurura. I am appalled that the S.U. took this dramatic, wrong-headed and disconcerting action at all!

I am a former art educator and currently an artist and life coach and I retired as a professor supporting educators who wanted to be licensed art teachers. This gesture by The Newton School is offensive and reactive and lacks professional courtesy and consideration to the role of art educator K12. This was not based on a lack of certification and instead based on the misappropriated perceptions that art is both “liked” by all masses and that art holds meaning for everyone. Art is created in response to many creative expressions and its dialogue may not be understood by all and could be private between artist and self. The teaching of art to young children is different and educators know what boundaries need to be held which this teacher does know and respected those boundaries. The SU needs to step aside from the artists professional dignity of her art making and simply allow Ms Berger to teach. She is not crossing any unprofessional boundaries.
