I became a volunteer for the town of brookhaven animal shelter in March 12,2013 previously I was a volunteer in a very small private shelter. Realizing that I could make more of a difference in my own town shelter I went in with high hopes but sadly I was not shown and basically was just told to buy a leash and walk the dogs ! Being a animal lover but not confident enough to just walk dogs I didn’t know nothing about ! I decided to get to know them better by acknowledging them by name and giving them treats, this went on for a few months until the new Director came in Ashley Boyd/ Behrens! She introduced herself to me and I explain that I’m sorry but I only come and give out treats and love because the other previous director didn’t show me what or how to do things properly! Ashley at the time took the time to help me find a wonderful dog to spend time with her name was breezy . From breezy I went on to grandpa and the to my boy George and then on to over hundred more . She had put into place a volunteer meeting where other volunteers were able to learn and discuss about other dogs , events and color coding volunteers and dogs . She was always available to answer questions or assist with the help of properly fitting harnesses for the dogs , showing how to teach the dog to sit , stay or give paw ! I looked forward to coming to the shelter weather it was on a lunch break or weekend . Soon after I realized that with more free time I was able to help out other town shelters close to my area so I became a volunteer at riverhead and Southold animal shelters because I believe in helping the dogs and cats from our own Community. And there was a great need ! When Ashely explained about the food pantry that she was trying to set up at Brookhaven animal shelter about the need for people in this community that were having a hard time making ends meat and that how a bag of dog or cat food could keep an animal in the home for another week or so ! Just so inspiring and I had neve

A disgrace, that this caring, giving director was put in this position. No one cares more about animals than Ashley.

Ashley was the best thing to ever happen to Brookhaven Animal Shelter. The “customer” is not always right and was endangering animals! Bring back Ashley!!

I noticed a very different environment once Ashley joined the shelter. Their Facebook page is informative and fun, the outreach for adoptions is fantastic, the volunteers seem to love the place, when I drop items off I see a busy parking lot and a community interested in promoting adoptions for all animals. at the shelter. I visited the shelter a number of years ago and found it to be depressing with little effort to highlight and promote their animals. What a difference now!!!!!

Ashley personally helped me when my dog was lost. She found him and gave me a message on FB when she saw I posted it. She’s been huge for the shelter for YEARS. THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!! Bring her bk!!!!

Having heard the story, it sounds like this situation was horribly mishandled. This woman deserves her position.

Shelter supervisor is one of the hardest jobs around. Ashley is an amazing supervisor and has done wonderful things not only for the shelter, but for the staff, the volunteers, and the town!

Without Ashley’s help, we never would have adopted our cats, who we got at BAS. She is a rare find. She should be praised for her work, not whatever this circus is.
