Reform the broken Seattle / King County criminal justice system now!

I grew up in Seattle, enough is enough!

The time for change is now....

Safety is job #1, for all citizens. We need to be tough on criminals in the short term and empathetic and solutions oriented for those at risk of being criminals in the long term. These two strategies can co-exist. Law abiding, hard working citizens should NOT be afraid to walk in downtown Seattle because of lax criminal justice laws! You will destroy our city if you let the criminals rule it. We didn't vote for them, we voted for this mayor and city council. Please make it happen.

Quit coddling criminals!

I missed the shooting at 3rd and Pine by a couple minutes. I've stopped walking in downtown since then. I drove through there this past weekend and was pleased to see a significant police presence but I also saw the usual gathering across the street from McDonald's. I almost someone who was obviously on drugs a block away from where the police were. Ran right out in front of me. Yesterday my wife's coworker saw a naked man walking down 4th ave. I just went to Bartells near Greenlake this morning and they had just had an incident where a shoplifter injured one of there employees. This person had been in there before apparently. A serious change needs to happen in this city. Compassion is one thing but allowing criminals to terrorize is gross negligence on the part of our offials. It's not just downtown, it's the entire city. I've written the mayor several times and like another post on this thread, I've never had a response.

When do people who live, work, vote, pay taxes, contribute to charitable causes, and truly care about the health of our community, actually count?

Hire more police! Enforce the LAW!

How can the police be expected to protect the law abiding citizens of our City when they are not supported by our City, County and State elected officials? Violent crime will continue to increase. Moreover, our City doesn't have a homeless problem. It has a mental health and addiction problem. Every responsible mental heath professional knows that treating homelessness as homelessness will solve nothing. Easy for elected officials to feign "compassion" by letting people camp anywhere and everywhere they chose. Hard to push people off the streets and establish community-based mental health facilities that can give people suffering from mental health diseases the help they actually need.

I see drug deals daily while walking to/from work (on 4th & Pike) or when I leave work to get lunch. It is an open market down here for buying and selling illegal drugs as well as an open location to use. Everyday I witness someone high on heroin. I have often witnessed addicts shooting up on the sidewalk. Every morning I see used needles. Last week (post-shooting), I had to stop the path that I was walking down the sidewalk on Pike so that two individuals could exchange drugs right in front of me. I am not surprised that the recent shootings occurred, as the majority of the street fights I've witnessed outside my office window are drug addicts and/or dealers arguing with each other. I heard the gunshots of the recent shooting outside my office window and looked outside to see people on the sidewalk running away in terror. It is the most unsettling thing I have witnessed in the past 9 years of working in this location. It is only a matter of time before more innocent people get caught in the crossfires of another drug related argument because the responsible parties are not facing prosecution on a regular basis. Please find a way for the Police department to regulate "the blade" by ensuring that the prosecuting attorneys office is working with them to keep repeat offenders in jail. Policing is only effective if criminals are officially charged and stay in jail where they belong. The system is clearly failing here.

One of them had 50 priors the other 25. Why were they even allowed on the streets? I moved downtown to be closer to restaurants, cultural institutions and I’m scared to walk the streets any more.

We need our public officials to execute a plan for our public safety

Pete Holmes must go. We can not consider one group of citizens more important than another. We need to feel safe in our city again. The laws apply to everyone.

Prosecutors need to support our police who are working hard to protect the city. Stop trying their hands. Put the offenders in jail or rehab like they do in other cities.

Have essentially quit going to Seattle due to the filth and crime. Need to use tough love, offer help or jail to those that are addicted and/mentally ill. Long jail time for prolific offenders. Enough with the revolving door for criminals.

The Homeless are ALLOWED to just go into the grocery stores and STEAL things off of the shelves and management can do NOTHING about it according to the elected PERSON of the YEAR OF MAGNOLIA Shelly who is the Manager of Albertson's. She knows who the people are but she can "do nothing" WHY? I asked her. Because of safety for her and the staff. But, when POLICE witness this type of behavior and aren't allowed to do anything about it. WHAT????????????????? This is absolutely uncalled for. It just allows the drug addicts to get away with more theft like behaviors. Get with it. My sister used to be on drugs. She would agree.

We need a serious police presence on this corner and throughout the city. Providing Housing will not stop this rom happening.
