Redo school boundary for new Richard Oliphant Elementary School in North Indio

I was at the public hearing at Jackson and was deeply unsatisfied with the school board's comments and reasoning. The bottom line is that the boundary doesn't make sense. There are natural boundaries (the flood channel) and unnatural boundaries (the freeway). I'm in Shadow Ranch. The school we are zoned for is Eisenhower - we are on a transfer to Earhart - which is not uncommon (loos at class size and the traffic it brings to the poor people in North La Quinta who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars more for their homes). We have been rezoned form Eisenhower to Jackson - still on the other side of the freeway. We are too close for bus service (unlike the people in the neighborhood surrounding Eisenhower who will be bussed 4 miles to the new school) but I am pretty sure I won't be having my kids walk over a 2 lane bridge over a freeway and flood control channel to get to school. All of the communities on the North side of the 10, including those east of Jackson, pay higher taxes with the expectation that the melloroos will eventually provide the infastructure and safe community that we strive to raise our children in. Building a new school miles from the school they are shutting down, not allowing children that live within a natural and man-made barrier to attend that school, doesn't bring about a sense of community and doesn't make sense.

These boundaries do not make any sense as to why people who live nest door to the school will not be permitted to attend said school.

Walking distance from home, this makes no sense

Boundaries need to include the communities that live near this school. We pay higher taxes here and shouldn’t have to drive our children elsewhere, when there is a new school being built in our community.

As a resident of the Shadow Hills community, and a taxpayer I am advocating the right for my child to attend the new school. The boundary lines need to change. I pay higher taxes in my area for this one reason, because the area was developing and new schools would be built only for you to tell me that by tax money will be used for this school that is just across the street from me, but my child will not attend.

Re-change New elementary school boundaries

This in no way makes any sense we The the people that live here will fight hundreds of people crossing over here to school their children coming from a not so great area bringing traffic crime and congestion to a school our own kids can not attend directly across from shopping and eating making it difficult in so many ways .

North of freeway residents should have priority. We pay higher taxes. Some kids are blocks away. Walking distance.

Shadow Hills Community should be in that boundary for that school

Good evening everyone. I attended the Board meeting last night and came away disheartened and disappointed that our voice as concerned, tax-paying and involved parents was dismissed. Having taken the day to compose myself and quell my frustration, here are some of my thoughts... Several parents showed up last night and several of us took to the podium to voice our concerns to the DSUSD School Board during public comment. One board member, Michael "Mike" Duran, spoke in favor of the proposed school boundary. I kindly reminded him (and his colleagues) of the circulated online petition with 270+ signatures we created asking the board to reconsider the proposed boundaries and solicit more input from us, the public. The Board held no discussion on the matter and voted unanimously IN FAVOR of the proposed boundary recommendations. I wondered why the remaining 4 board members went along with Michael Duran (despite the 10+ people that commented against the proposed boundary) without any debate or discourse. I inquired as a follow up and found that Michael Duran is our School Board District representative (Trustee) and his zone is North Indio (north of Indio Blvd). Here is the zone map http://dsusd.us/sites/default/files/DSUSD_TrusteeAreas.pdf I’m frustrated and disappointed that our School Board representative, Michael Duran, dismissed our reasonable pleas, efforts and process for reconsideration of the proposed boundary and, in essence, influenced to board to accept the boundaries as presented without further questioning the methodology, safety concerns, resident feedback, etc. I felt compelled to speak up and take a stand, holding our public servants accountable (though last night we were unsuccessful). Thanks to the parents and neighbors that showed up to the board meeting last night demonstrating support of our efforts; thank you to those parents that despite having tired children with them at the board meeting, took time away from homework or

As the Mayor, City of Indio The boundaries should reflect the area and neighborhoods of the Shadow Hills Community. The concept of a walkable neighborhood school where the surrounding neighborhoods invest in that school makes it the most successful. In transportation policy across the State communities are moving toward walkable, bikeable communities to get people out of cars and vehicles and reduce traffic congestion. Schools across the district are already overwhelmed with traffic and egress, ingress during drop off and pick up of students. With this school directly in housing communities the traffic complaints will be high from the neighborhoods unless the boundaries reflect the walkable, bikeable concepts to get traffic off the streets.

Stupid is as stupid does and this is really stupid. How about taking the area down by Van Buren and sending them to the school on Jackson and Hwy 111 or one of the others closer to their homes. One of the biggest problems we have when traveling around the valley is the number of cars around the schools when school lets out. Maybe if they sent kids to the closest school instead of planning like this plan it would allow kids to walk to school, save gas fumes and traffic jams in our valley. Bottom line is that kids need to go to the closest school to their homes, not be transported halfway across the valley.

Our kids should attend school in our neighborhood.

Shadow hills kids should say in their neighbor... no need to make parents drive further then needed. We already pay more then eles where.

I strongly disagree with the boundaries that have been set for the schools in Shadow Hill Communities, the residents here should have first priority for attending these schools. Setting this Boundary clearly makes more traffic with the buses, more tax dollars go to waste for unnecessary transportation wages, vehicle maintenance, etc. The traffic over Jackson & the Monroe bridge already cannot move smoothly during normal hours. The nightmare of expenses this will onset needs to be fully evaluated.

I think my son should be able to attend the new school due to us living so close to it.

You acquired the land for the new school on Gore street in 2007 for the purposes of a new school for North Indio Residents. The residents of this area have been waiting, very patiently for this school to open. To bait and switch and make over half of the communities in the Shadow Hills area not be able to go to this school should be cause for you all to be fired. These boundaries are completely illogical and will create a ton of problems for the area. This definitely needs to be fixed!!!!!
