This was not well thought out - it is obvious the decision to shut down the depot has been made (without public consultation), and the new pool and community centre are going to be built (which will benefit many NW residents). What is needed now is a SOLUTION!
Listen to the residents of the city, there have been many great suggestions.
We NEED a location WITHIN the boundaries of New Westminster.
We need to be promoting recycling, we need to make it easy and convenient. We need to cut down emissions and make our city green.
Get public opinion, put out a survey, but let's get this done in our own city for the benefit of all NW residents.

I am very disappointed there was NO public consultation BEFORE the Mayor and City Council made the decision to shut down the current depot. Being told at a resident meeting the move would be temporary was unfair to all citizens. If City Council does not listen to the residents of the city, why would the citizens choose to elect and pay them? If this decision is not reversed, I do believe at the next election we will all be reversing our votes. I would also like to point out the School Boards motion that was passed unanimously on November 26, 2019: THAT the Board of Education of SD40 (New Westminster) include a goal within its strategic plan, a long-term Climate Action Plan and to direct staff to incorporate environmental strategies when preparing and executing capital planning submissions (i.e. Annual Facilities Grant and 5-Year Capital Plan) to the Board of Education and Ministry of Education. Further, specific consideration of the following shall be made:
Measurable targets and specific timelines and goals to reduce SD40s greenhouse gas emissions, consistent with the IPCC 1.5.
Consideration to all SD40 schools and sites, transportation and purchasing and procurement functionalities.
Costs associated to the plans put in place.
Opportunities for stakeholder engagement and input.
District Staff to provide an update on the development on the Climate Action Plan taken by the District in September 2020.
I am extremely pleased that the SB and trustees have made such a bold move and see what is important to the children and residents of NW,. At the same time I am extremely disappointed that our Mayor and City Council have made a decision that goes directly against the Climate Action Plan. By choosing to ask NW residents to get into their vehicles, make extra trips and leave our city, council is showing they are not thinking of what is best for our city and our residents.
This needs to be re-thought.
A new location within New Westminster needs to

I would like to add that having a version of the recycling depot is important to the residents who use it. That is the piece in planning and consultation that is missing in my opinion. The pop-up events appear to be an after thought. Perhaps expanding the curb side pickup for single family homes and the many multi unit dwellings to include a greater majority of these items in blue bins is needed, if a recycling depot somewhere in our city is not foreseeable.

Please use common sense and keep the depot in NW. Driving to Coquitlam is a ridiculous idea and will cause undue stress for people and bad for environment while car is idling waiting for train to pass on Brunette.

Moving the depot is not in New Westminster best interest for our community. I am against not having our own depot. I use it all the time.

This community needs this recycling depot. Such a shame to have it close. Many new west residents aren’t able to get to another communities depot....leave it alone and keep it open!

To add to this, The CGP is a fantastic capital project and much needed. I don't believe anybody is advocating that the pool not be built, but a version of the current depot is required in New Westminster as well.

The proposed model of closing this depot in February 2020, the Coquitlam Transfer Station anticipated to open in fall 2020, and having pop-up recycling events start in April 2020 and each 2 months following, is short sighted in my opinion. With the speed of density building in our city and the existing strata and rental complexes, where are residents supposed to store their recycleables in the meantime? The recycleables that the current depot would take: styrofoam, softplastics, household batteries, appliances, yard/garden waste, light bulbs, etc. cannot possibly be expected to be stored in these complexes until a pop-up recycling event date. These items will absolutely end up in the waste bins and subsequently those properties can be fined for items not supposed to be in the garbage. I question how the city is mitigating the inconvenience of these additional costs, fire safety issues, etc. to MURB property owners and dwellers?

Difficult to get to Coquitlam location
when one is handicapped and doesn't drive!!! Can only ask help from neighbours in an emergency. Recyling isn't an emergency.

Recycling should be more accessible, not less. We need large container bins for glass, soft plastics, cardboard, etc. at every mall or public parking lot and at every transit station. Place them there, as people don’t mind walking or driving short distances. Do not move recycling out of the city. That is so backward.

As a disabled person without a car it will be impossible for me to find a way to get my stuff to the new site. Removing this recycling depot is a huge mistake

Big mistake to close this. The whole area uses it. Less convenience means less recycling.

While the one-stop recycling depot in Coquitlam is great it doesn't serve the majority of New West residents, but then neither does the current location in New West. It doesn't serve those without vehicles, meaning it ends up in landfills or dumped. Having two or more satellite recycling depots (downtown, uptown, etc.) for those without vehicles for items not included in the bi-weekly pick-up could be more effective.
