By the year 2017, the City of Hamilton’s Public Works Department plans to be “recognized as the centre of environmental and innovative excellence in Canada.”  Its goal to bring a 65% diversion of waste from our one and only landfill site includes a household Blue Box program, Green Cart Program and household hazardous waste program. While these programs address the issue of household waste, the need for public recycling and litter receptacles in downtown Hamilton is apparent in the prevalence of litter, often consisting of potentially useful materials such as plastic containers, papers and bottles, which could be recycled. Thus far, Hamilton has been successful in diverting 42% of waste from the landfill site. However, in order to reach our goal of 65%, we must expand our efforts.

The City of Hamilton has been active in drawing attention to the importance of addressing the issue of littering and waste management in Hamilton. Establishing a more efficient Public Space Recycling Program in downtown Hamilton will promote Hamilton's Clean City Strategy and provide residents with a positive alternative to littering.  This petition seeks to have the Public Space Recycling Program expanded beyond the downtown core and into areas such as Corktown, St. Clair, Bakely and Gibson. Please sign this petition to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and help create a cleaner, greener and more "litter-conscious" Hamilton.
