Central Bedfordshire Council to reconsider 20mph speed limits due to unecessary danger to motorists

I have lost count of the times when driving at 20mph... on these roads I have been overtaken by irate drivers .. I agree with having speed restrictions near schools /hospitals etc. but ... EVERY ROAD ??/ stupid !! an accident waiting to happen

The limits are dangerous because: a) people are looking at speedometer instead of the road b) they result in dangerous driving practices such as tailgating and rapid declaration near cameras c) pedestrians become complacent, thinking everyone's going slowly but not everyone heeds the limit, potentially resulting in collisions. It would be far better to educate pedestrians in road sense, as many adults were taught in school and put effort into enforcing existing 30 limits and putting cameras at traffic lights to catch those that flout the existing (perfectly adequate) traffic laws

For 100 yards either side of school entrances I can understand. But elsewhere, and at other hours, it is plainly unnecessary and results in motorists concentrating more on keeping their speed below 20mph than keeping their eye on the road.

Most accidents and deaths have occurred on the A5 and A505, yet their limits are up to 40mph!

Just another way for the council to give our money to the contractor who dreams up these ideas

Honestly, how many people adhere to it anyway? Then the one that does frustrates the driver behind! Quite right, it is unnatural - For built-up urban roads with street lighting the speed limit is 30 mph - Who do Central Beds Council think they are to contradict the Highway Code? And yes. I can appreciate that near schools it may be appropriate, or should it be that we need to re-educate children in road safety and for them not to arrogantly assume, with headphones in that they have the right of way over road users????? Oh, and one more thing...are Central Beds Council prepared to pay to replace my shock absorbers ???? Rant Over.

There are enough speed bumps and speed cameras around to worry about keeping to this unnatural speed limit this area, it should be reconsidered.

I agree with 20mph limits near schools but I have seen more near misses and stupid driving, overtaking and tailgating in the last few months than I have seen in my 17 years a west Dunstable resident!

The 20mph limit is far too slow for the majority of roads it applies too.

We can't even get into 3rd gear in the Picasso. It's also causing more pollution driving in lower gears.

You can only keep a car at 20 mph in second gear and you can't drive around town in 2nd gear it's not natural.kids coming out of school think they can walk out in front of you because you are going so slow.

Its a disgrace. Everybody I know including drivers and non drivers, parents & even police officers think its unnecessary and unfair. I haven't personally heard one word of praise for it. At least cut it down to school hours or 7am-7pm, or best would be to just to abolish it as its obviously just another money making scheme for councils

The council were told how ridiculous this was from the start. They got Amey ti do the non biased consultation only to go ahead abd award themselves the contract and the council agreed to it.....daft or what....

Silly, I am used to the 3omph , this is a joke like all the rest of recent changes - it makes me angry

Is ridiculous.uses alot of fuel,so bad for the environment that we are meant to be helping.also takes alot longer to get anywhere which is unnecessary..

I am constantly looking at my speedo to check I'm not going over 20mph. I agree to the 20 limit around schools but people keep overtaking me making it more dangerous overall.

Keep 20mph around the schools but 20mph in other areas is just plain daft! Today in Meadway I was overtaken by two cars because I was obeying the speed limit!
