We alumni, benefactors, parents, and friends of the University rely on you to vet prospective trustees and ensure that they will promote the raison d'etre, the distinctiveness, of the University of Notre Dame, its Catholicity. Without ND's bonds to Christ and His Church, there is no reason to call it Catholic, no reason to name it after His Mother.

If you want a young alumnus or alumni on the board, why not invite a former editor of the Irish Rover. They are among the most intelligent, articulate and morally grounded persons I have had the pleasure to encounter.

Those who guard, guide, and govern an institition must hold views and values consistent with the enduring purposes of that institution. The choice of Ms. Washington is, in that light, wholly ill advised.

the very least we can do in the appointment of trustees is to appoint persons who are adherents of Church doctrine and who support important initiatives such as the university's litigation against the HHS mandate.

Outrageous that anyone would see fit to have someone so blatantly opposed to Catholic principals, particularly at this most critical time in safeguarding our religious liberty and Constitutional principals. Katie should be asked to resign immediately!

Not only does Ms. Washington's youth and inexperience lack qualification for membership on the Board, her unrecanted views on the mandate to provide coverage for abortifacients and contraceptives is not consistent with a Catholic institution. Can any one of you imagine this would be a choice that Christ, our Lord and Savior and ultimately the judge of how we will spend eternity, would have made to guide our beloved institution?

As a son of an alumnus, alumnus, father of an alumnus, I am outraged that again, the University formerly known as Our Lady's, has shown its lack of support for the teachings of Christ and His Church. Judgment will be harsh if its leaders continue to draw people away from the Church.
