I am very disappointed in this appointment. One would think that it would be a given that appointees to the Board of Trustees would uphold Church teaching in all its fullness.

I respectfully submit that The Board of Directors should release a statement to Ms.Washington clearly stating The University's Mission and why it would not be appropriate for Ms.Washington to serve as a Notre Dame trustee who has a fiduciary duty to uphold our Catholic Faith and Mission. Perhaps, when confronted with the truth about our Catholic Faith, Ms. Washington will become transformed, and be willing to support the Catholic Mission of The University of Notre Dame. If Ms. Washington is not able to profess that she is aware of The Catholic Mission of The University of Notre Dame and that she supports this Mission wholly, she should be asked to resign immediately.

As an alumnus of the University, father of a present student and 2 graduated students, and a member of the Sorin Society, I urge the Fellows of the University to rescind the appointment of Ms. Washington to the Board of Trustees. Her position on contraception certainly merits her removal, and her age and lack of experience call into question why she was ever appointed to such an important post.
