All schools in the state of Florida should have recess. It should be mandatory and should be seen as necessary for a child's health.

I am happy to inform our recess supporters in Osceola County:
TODAY'S OSCEOLA COUNTY ELEMENTARY RECESS COMMITTEE OUTCOME WAS SUCCESSFUL! Next school year, our K-5 school children will have daily recess! Our Kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders in Osceola County will benefit from daily recess starting next school year 2016-2017.
Our elementary recess committee has agreed that our K-5 children in Osceola County will have daily recess: a minimum of 20 mins on regularly scheduled days ( MTThF) & a minimum of 10 mins on early release days (W).
A minimum of 20 mins on MTThF. A minimum of 10 mins of recess on Wednesdays. A total of 90 mins a week for recess for our elementary school children. THIS IS A MODEL RECESS PLAN FOR ALL OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO FOLLOW. It mirrors closely to the recess bills that Rep. Rene Plasencia & Sen. Alan Hays has filed in the House & Senate. BUTschool districts in others counties are bull headed and refuse to listen to set aside, to require time for our children to have recess and be kids. SO ONWARD WITH THESE RECESS BILLS HB833 & SB1003, SUPPORT IT.
RECESS FITS in our children's schedule! It can be done! If the districts won't do it like Osceola is planning to do, then we elevate the case to the state level, the legislators. ALL CHILDREN, regardless of their zip codes, their counties, their property taxes, homeless or not, rich, poor, or middle class have a right to daily recess breaks. RECESS FITS FOR ALL CHILDREN IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF FLORIDA.
Tamara Bray Pelc Melodie Ray Griffin, Michelle Kemp Gillaspy, and Angela Spring ~ THESE PARENTS who sat in today's negotiation table with me to advocate for daily recess for our children WERE AWESOME! THANK YOU!

Thank you TJ for the reference. I will look for it & forward it our School Board. Thank you for supporting this effort to bring daily recess back. I agree with you, this is not a trivial issue. Play deprivation has long term consequences to the individual and society.

The brain is a muscle that after a work out needs a rest. Recess for our children is exactly that.

I think its a great idea and I think all kids needs a little time to run and play and do some outdoor activity without worrying about being graded for during it right or wrong. Just have a break for fun!

Dear Parents: Recess is not a "outside time" issue it is an brain improvement / development issue. Please refer to the research The American Sports Institute at: www.americansportsinstitute.org and filed under "Research Community" and "Articles, Papers & Reports".
Children perform better in educational work when it is mixed with regular physical activity. Consistently you will find that high achievers, including the past two Presidents (biking and golf), systematically get physical activity. This is not an accident. Removing recess means the schools have missed are wilfully ignoring recent and compelling research: At the highest level this research shows - Sitting is bad for health and cognition; activity (that need not be sports) enhances brain activity, inhibits depression, and has long-term (cost saving) health consequences. This is not a trivial issue. Our children (and all of us) will face long-term consequences from un-examined views of poorly informed and directed school boards. Yours - TJ Meagher, Esq.

Children need to let out all there energy out, and connect with their fellow classmates on a more personal level. Building friendships that could last a life time. If you take that little time they do have to move get their hearts pumping , and time to express themselves. Then you are going to have a child or two maybe even more that won't stay still, are super talkative, and lazy in your classroom because they need to just go outside and let it out. Recess is a way to get what you have to get put and then refocus once you're in the classroom.

As a teacher watching these students check out as the day goes on I know a quick break to run and play would bring them back in!

Kids need outside time. I bet scores would go up if children had a break and ran around everyday, you would see a difference in their grades. Their attention span is small and behavioral issues would also improve. Please allow recess!

Considering close to 60% of children are overweight or obese, recess is necessary.
