People petitioning for the Electoral College to not follow the rules of their state constitutions in reference to casting votes for president are apparently ignorant as to the reason why the Electoral College even exists, and why the Founding Fathers' created it. It was one of the major compromises to creating the United States (Colonies) as a democratic republic. The smaller states did not want the larger, more highly populated states to have the ability to totally override any voice they might have in the election of national leaders. If the election went strictly by popular vote, the smaller states might as well sit it out. Candidates would never need to campaign, or even listen to the smaller states. Literally, the seven or eight states with the highest populations could continually determine who the president was/is. The voices of the other smaller, less populated states wouldn't amount to a hill of beans!
Many people believe we are a democracy. We are a REPUBLIC so that all voices can be heard. Electoral College is there for this purpose. We are a democracy BUT our county is a REPUBLIC.
