Reading Recovery allows the lowest achieving students to make accelerated progress in reading and writing. It gives them the confidence to be independent and strategic in problem-solving unknown words when reading and writing. I am a special education teacher and Reading Recovery has helped struggling readers and writers achieve grade level success. Some of these students could have potentially needed an IEP if they didn't receive Reading Recovery. RI would be making a huge mistake giving up Reading Recovery.

Reading Recovery has the best chance of improving a school and school system when it is supported by administrators and correlated with comprehensive literacy classroom programs. It IS cost effective because it reduces failure and retention and saves many children from continued failure.

If we care about children's self esteem and ability to make educated choices in life, we need to provide Reading Recovery to those who have a more difficult time with literacy. No other intervention rates as highly.... waiting til children fail is an injustice !

Having been a public school educator for many years in a district that had a long-term implementation of Reading Recovery, I know this intervention provides a significant, positive difference in the lives of young, struggling readers. No other intervention will achieve such strong outcomes.

By eliminating Reading Recovery as an intensive intervention for the lowest performing 1st graders, you will be eliminating, quite possibly, their best chance for acquiring the skills and strategies necessary to become effective readers.

Eliminating Reading Recovery as part of your districts support system and replacing it with groups of 1:3 or 1:5 will guarantee that many more children will fail to learn to read, be classified as LD or dyslexic, and continue to struggle with learning in all subjects for their remaining years in your school system.

As a product of Warwick schools, I am forever grateful for my many experiences in literacy in the schools that have helped me to be a lifelong learner. As an early literacy expert, I know that research shows that Reading Recovery is the best way we know to make sure ALL students become readers. Please do not abandon this important intervention.

This program has brought confidence in both my boys and it has also strengthen their love for books. My 9 year old is reading above his grade level because of this program and my 6 year old tries reading everything he sees and he is so proud of himself, it's a joy to hear him read. I strongly support reading recovery!

Reading Recovery is the best early intervention with a proven track record and research base. Anyone concerned with financial savings must consider the long-term costs of years of remediation vs. the short-term costs of support in Reading Recovery.
