The Highland Council and Historic Scotland have formally agreed to initiate the conservation project for Old St. Peter’s Church. We are moving into the site assessment phase immediately to ensure work begins as planned. I will keep this page active so you can monitor the progress of the restoration.

There has been publicity about the lack of interest shown in one of Scotland’s most unique buildings. Parts of Old St. Peter’s Church have been standing since the Viking occupation of the most northerly town on the U.K. mainland. Public minded citizens are now joining together to see that some action is taken place to conserve this magnificent building. This is the chance for you to help make a difference. This is a building that needs so much attention given to it; there are so many questions that need to be answered. What is essential is that we can show the two main bodies involved, the Highland Council and Historic Scotland that action needs to be taken soon before it’s too late. Show your support; add your name to the many voices who want to see the beautiful building open once again to the public!

Updates

May 24, 2013

I have sent formal requests for site maintenance plans to both the Highland Council and Historic Scotland. We are currently waiting for their official response regarding the structural integrity of the church. I will provide an update as soon as they acknowledge our inquiry.

The growth of this petition has reached a level that warrants formal engagement with the Highland Council. I am currently drafting a letter to summarize our concerns for a scheduled meeting with their planning department.

ABSOLUTELY. Need to preserve what little Viking history we have left in this town.

Such a shame to see it just sitting there locked up behind fences. Thurso deserves better.

People interested in their history should be able to visit the church.
